Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded further operational successes in Zamfara State, foiling separate terrorist abduction attempts, rescuing civilians, and neutralising an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by terrorists in Bukkuyum Local Government Area. The operations, conducted on Monday, August 17, 2026, underscore the military's growing capability to respond swiftly to emerging threats and protect vulnerable communities across the North-West region.
According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, troops of Sector 2 responded to an abduction incident along the Gurusu–Anka Road on August 17, swiftly pursuing the terrorists and compelling them to abandon their captives and flee. Seven victims, comprising four women and three children, were successfully rescued unharmed. The operation demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led responses and the military's commitment to protecting civilians from the scourge of kidnapping, which has become a hallmark of banditry in the region.
In a separate operation in Tsafe Local Government Area, troops responded swiftly to reports of terrorists attempting to abduct motorists around Magazu Village. The troops engaged the terrorists, forcing them to abandon their victims and flee into the surrounding bushes. The rescued victims, some of whom sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, were promptly evacuated to a medical facility for treatment. The military's ability to respond to multiple threats simultaneously reflects the increasing operational tempo of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has intensified its campaign against terrorist networks across the North-West.
Earlier the same day, troops of Sector 2 responded to the discovery of a terrorist-planted IED along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum LGA. The area was immediately secured, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team successfully neutralised the device, thereby averting potential casualties among troops and civilian road users. The recovery and neutralisation of the IED is a significant achievement, as it prevents the terrorists from using explosives to target military convoys and civilian vehicles. The growing use of IEDs by bandits and terrorists in the North-West has been a source of concern, and the military's ability to detect and neutralise these devices is critical to maintaining the safety of road users.
The successful interventions underscore the vigilance, responsiveness and determination of Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops in protecting lives, securing communities and keeping major routes safe from terrorist activities. The Theatre Command has reassured the public that troops will continue to maintain pressure on terrorist elements across the Joint Operations Area and deny them the freedom to threaten innocent citizens. Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information on suspicious activities to security forces.
The latest operations in Zamfara State come amid intensified military efforts to combat terrorism and banditry across the North-West. In recent weeks, troops have conducted a series of clearance operations, rescued kidnapped victims, and recovered weapons and explosives from terrorist hideouts. The military has also stepped up air strikes on terrorist concentrations, forcing many bandits to abandon their camps and flee into the surrounding forests. Despite these successes, the military has acknowledged that the fight against terrorism is far from over, and that sustained pressure on terrorist networks is essential to achieving lasting peace.
The rescue of seven women and children from the clutches of terrorists, the neutralisation of a deadly IED, and the successful response to multiple abduction attempts are a testament to the courage and professionalism of the troops involved. Their actions have saved lives and prevented what could have been devastating attacks on innocent civilians. As Operation FANSAN YAMMA continues its offensive against terrorist networks, the military has called on residents to continue providing intelligence that can help prevent attacks and protect communities. The message from the Theatre Command is clear: the era of impunity for terrorists in the North-West is coming to an end, and no criminal network will be allowed to hold communities hostage to fear and violence.
