Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Jamal Musiala has revealed he is suffering from a treatable neurological condition after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in three days, sparking fresh health concerns just days before the start of the new Bundesliga season. The 23-year-old fell to the ground during a pre-season friendly against Heidenheim on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, only minutes after coming off the bench, in a near-identical incident to his collapse against RB Leipzig on Saturday, August 15.
Musiala, who had returned to training on Monday after the first collapse, was substituted into the match against Heidenheim in the second half and initially made a positive impact, even setting up a scoring chance for Harry Kane. But just minutes later, he appeared dazed and collapsed off the ball, prompting Bayern's medical staff to rush onto the pitch as teammates from both teams formed a protective guard around him. He was able to get up on his own and leave the field, but the incident sent shockwaves through the football world.
The first collapse occurred during Bayern's 3-1 friendly victory over RB Leipzig in Munich on Saturday, when Musiala went down in the 83rd minute amid sweltering temperatures exceeding 30°C. He appeared woozy and disoriented before being helped off the pitch.
After Tuesday's match, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the club was aware of Musiala's condition and that the player would address the situation himself. "Jamal will speak about this in the near future. We knew about it and we are aware of the situation," Eberl told reporters.
Musiala subsequently took to Instagram to provide a full explanation, revealing that he has been diagnosed with "brief, temporary, but treatable absence seizures" resulting from a neurological dysfunction. "I know they might look alarming at first glance, but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life," he wrote. "I am receiving excellent medical care and remain very optimistic. FC Bayern and my personal support network are right by my side, helping me through this".
He emphasised that there is no long-term health risk and that the condition is highly manageable with proper medical care. "In close consultation and regular contact with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge; with the medical clearance of the neurologists, I want to continue doing what helps my recovery most: simply living my life and pursuing my passion for playing football," Musiala added.
The news comes after a difficult year for the young star, who missed the first six months of the previous season after breaking his ankle at the 2025 Club World Cup. He returned to action in the Bundesliga at the start of 2026 and went on to start all four of Germany's matches at the World Cup, scoring one goal. Despite the alarming nature of the incidents, Musiala has expressed confidence in his recovery and intends to continue playing, with Bayern's support. "I feel very positive and am on the right track," he said.
Bayern are set to begin their competitive season this weekend with the Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund. For now, the club and its star player are focused on managing the condition and ensuring Musiala can continue to perform at the highest level while receiving the medical care he needs.
