The quiet of the Korokpan area of Minna, Niger State, was shattered on the evening of August 10, 2026, when a 30-year-old man, Sunday Pada, was beaten and stabbed to death by a mob after a false alarm accused him of being a thief. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., has once again brought the scourge of mob justice and jungle justice into sharp focus, raising urgent questions about the rule of law and the growing culture of impunity in Nigeria.

According to the Niger State Police Command, Pada, a resident of Gogala Village in Shiroro Local Government Area, was returning from a friend's house when some persons in the Korokpan area raised an alarm, shouting "thief." The suspects, later identified as Ibrahim Abubakar, Aliyu Onah, Godwin Musa and Aminu Bawa, all residents of Korokpan, intercepted the victim, beat him severely, and subsequently stabbed him to death. The police public relations officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that operatives attached to the Paiko Division were alerted and moved to the scene, but the suspects had fled before their arrival. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The police have since arrested the four suspects in connection with the killing. Three of the suspects were initially discovered in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following a raid in the area and were subsequently handed over to the police. The fourth suspect was later arrested. The suspects are currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, for alleged criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. The police have urged members of the public to report suspected criminality to law enforcement agencies rather than resorting to violence against alleged offenders.

The killing of Sunday Pada is the latest in a series of mob lynching incidents that have plagued Nigeria, where unverified allegations of theft, often fueled by rumours and social media, have led to extrajudicial killings. In July 2026, a University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, was beaten to death by a mob over allegations of stealing an iPhone. The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for an end to jungle justice. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has repeatedly warned against mob action, stating that allegations, rumours, or shouts of "thief" do not constitute evidence or confer on anyone the right to take another person's life.

The Niger State Police Command has also announced the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and ammunition along a suspected bandits' route around Krusha-Genu village in Rijau Local Government Area. The recovery was made on August 15 following intelligence from a reliable source. The operatives recovered an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing 19 rounds of live ammunition, another empty magazine, and 55 rounds of GPMG anti-aircraft ammunition. The items are in custody undergoing forensic investigation and analysis, while joint clearance operations are intensified.

In a separate operation, the command arrested three suspects allegedly involved in stealing goats and other animals in the Gidan-Kwano area. The suspects, Danlami Ali, 45; Sabastine Masangu, 49; and Masaud Abdullahi, 35, were intercepted in a black tinted Volkswagen vehicle. Animal skins suspected to have been stolen were recovered from the vehicle. The police also arrested four other suspects in Minna for alleged criminal conspiracy, extortion and fraud linked to a fake QNET online investment scheme.

The tragic death of Sunday Pada serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for citizens to trust the legal process. As the police continue their investigations, the family of the deceased and the people of Niger State await justice. The suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
