The OK Movement, a political platform backing the 2027 presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, was thrown into fresh uncertainty on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following the immediate resignation of its Director-General, High Chief Peter Ameh. Ameh, who is also the National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), announced his departure in a letter personally signed and made available in Abuja, citing his need to focus on his senatorial campaign for the Kogi East Senatorial District under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The resignation, which takes effect immediately, comes barely a month after Ameh was appointed to lead the movement's national structure, raising questions about the stability and organisational coherence of the group as it seeks to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections. In his resignation letter, Ameh stated: "I hereby formally tender my resignation as Director-General of the OK Movement, effective immediately. This decision will enable me to devote the necessary time and energy to my campaign for the Kogi East Senatorial District, where I am the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC."
Ameh was careful to stress that his decision was not a rejection of the movement's ideals or a withdrawal of support for Peter Obi, whom he described as "my leader." He expressed his readiness to accept whoever Obi appoints as his successor and reaffirmed his commitment to the political project behind the OK Movement. "I humbly accept any individual appointed by my leader to succeed me in this role," he said, while praising Obi for his "exemplary leadership, unwavering integrity, and enduring credibility."
The OK Movement emerged as a platform for supporters of the Obi and Kwankwaso political blocs following moves to bring their political structures together behind a common presidential ticket for the 2027 election. Ameh's resignation comes at a critical stage in the movement's mobilisation, with political parties and emerging coalitions intensifying efforts to consolidate support ahead of the presidential contest. The departure of a key figure like Ameh, coupled with reports of internal leadership disputes, has left supporters uncertain about the movement's future direction.
In his farewell message, Ameh expressed gratitude to Obi and wished the OK Movement success in its future endeavours. "I remain firmly committed to the ideals that united us and wish the OK Movement every success in its future endeavours," he said. As the movement now faces the challenge of finding a new director-general to steer its affairs, the political landscape ahead of 2027 continues to take shape, with alliances and support structures being tested even before the campaign season fully begins.
