The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old suspected vandal, Nnaji Chidiebere, after he was electrocuted while allegedly attempting to vandalise a power transformer along Ogbaike Road in Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on Monday, August 17, 2026, at about 2:20 p.m., triggered panic among residents who discovered the suspect trapped inside the transformer enclosure suffering from severe burns.
The command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, stating that residents alerted the police after finding the suspect unconscious inside the transformer. Officers attached to the Udenu Police Division responded swiftly, evacuated the suspect to a nearby medical facility, where he was resuscitated before being transferred to a specialist hospital for intensive care.
Upon regaining consciousness, Chidiebere identified himself and claimed he had acted alone during the operation. However, preliminary police investigations have linked him to ongoing transformer vandalism in the area. Detectives are conducting further inquiries to determine the full scope of his activities, identify potential accomplices and prepare formal charges for prosecution.
Reacting to the arrest, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised members of the Obollo-Afor community for their prompt vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies. Giwa reaffirmed the command's commitment to safeguarding public utility infrastructure and urged residents across Enugu State to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public installations to the nearest police division.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Enugu State, which has resulted in significant financial losses and disruptions to power supply. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has previously raised alarms over the increasing rate of vandalism of its infrastructure, lamenting the destruction of transformers, cables and other critical equipment.
The suspect's electrocution serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with vandalising electrical installations, which often result in severe injuries or death. Despite this, the incidence of transformer vandalism has continued to rise, with many communities left in darkness as a result of these criminal activities.
The police have urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to help curb the menace of infrastructure vandalism. The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, and the police have vowed to ensure that justice is served.
