A video of Prophetess Eunice Odinaka, a female pastor at Spring of Solutions Ministries in Lagos, has ignited a fierce debate across social media after she issued a stark warning to single women: if you cannot afford a flight ticket or do not have a job, do not get married. The cleric, whose sermon has since gone viral, urged young women to prioritise financial independence before walking down the aisle, arguing that marriage without personal income or a career could leave women trapped in unhealthy relationships.
Speaking during a recent sermon, Prophetess Eunice did not mince words. "I say this, and I will say this with my full chest: If you're a young lady and you have not—and you cannot pay for your flight tickets, don't marry," she declared. She further warned that women without jobs should also not rush into marriage or abandon their dreams. "If you're a young lady, you cannot pay for your flight tickets, don't do what? Don't dream. If you're a young lady, you don't have a job, don't what? Don't dream. It is not test-by-moonlight," she stated.
The prophetess explained that while a man may be able to rebuild his life after marriage, women often face greater difficulties, particularly when they find themselves in marriages that are unhealthy or unsuitable for them. "A man can navigate his life, but a woman cannot navigate inside marriage. It's hard. It's very, very hard for you to navigate," she said. She noted that some women remain in difficult marriages because they are already thinking about how to leave and start their lives all over again. "It's not as if they cannot come out. They are thinking of how to come out and begin to start all over again, navigate through life," she explained.
The prophetess also observed that modern marriages differ significantly from those of previous generations. "And the marriages we see these days are not the same marriage of my father those days," she said, adding that "every man you see wants a helper." Her comments have sparked reactions on social media, with discussions centring on financial independence, personal development and the realities of modern marriage. Some have applauded her for encouraging women to build themselves before marriage, while others have criticised her remarks as overly harsh or out of touch with the economic realities facing many young Nigerians.
Prophetess Eunice's advice comes amid growing conversations about the importance of women maintaining careers, businesses or other means of livelihood alongside marriage. Her warning that women without their own means often find themselves trapped in unhealthy partnerships resonates with many who have witnessed or experienced the challenges of financial dependency in marriage. However, her blunt delivery has also drawn criticism from those who argue that marriage should be about partnership and love, not financial transactions.
For the prophetess, the message is clear: financial independence is not optional for women entering marriage. "If you don't have anything you are doing whatsoever, don't marry," she concluded. Whether her warning will be heeded or dismissed, one thing is certain: Prophetess Eunice has ensured that the conversation about money, marriage and women's independence will not be ignored.
