A critical road connecting Ibadan in Oyo State to Abeokuta in Ogun State has become a nightmare for commuters and residents, with the deteriorating condition of the route sparking fresh calls for urgent government intervention. The road, which serves communities around Tipper Garage, Ayilara, Lade and Bako in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, has reportedly deteriorated to the point that residents have had to fill some sections with stones as a temporary measure, while heavy rainfall has made it almost impassable.
The plight of the road was brought to public attention on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, when Tracka, a civic accountability platform, posted a video highlighting the deplorable state of the road on X, tagging Governor Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Government and the Federal Ministry of Works. In the video, residents expressed frustration over the years of neglect and the failure of authorities to rehabilitate the road, which serves as a vital link between the two states and is used daily by commuters, traders and residents of the surrounding communities. Residents told Tracka that the road had deteriorated significantly and that they had resorted to filling sections with stones as a temporary measure, adding that after heavy rainfall, the road became extremely difficult to navigate, affecting commuters and communities that rely on it daily.
The situation has raised concerns about the safety of road users, the impact on economic activities and the failure of successive governments to address the infrastructure needs of the area. The road, which connects Oyo and Ogun states, is a critical artery for the transportation of goods and services, and its poor condition has led to increased travel times, higher vehicle maintenance costs and a heightened risk of accidents. For residents of the affected communities, the road has become a symbol of government neglect and a daily reminder of the gap between political promises and the lived reality of ordinary Nigerians.
The poor state of the Ibadan-Abeokuta link road is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of infrastructure decay across Nigeria, where many roads have been allowed to deteriorate to the point of collapse despite repeated government promises of rehabilitation and investment. The situation in Ido LGA highlights the challenges facing commuters in rural and semi-urban areas, where the lack of maintenance has left roads in a state of disrepair, making travel hazardous and hindering economic development.
Tracka's call for urgent intervention by the Oyo State Government and the Federal Ministry of Works reflects the growing frustration of citizens who have grown tired of empty promises and are demanding concrete action from their leaders. The platform, which tracks government projects and advocates for accountability, has urged Governor Makinde's office and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to intervene and facilitate the rehabilitation of the road. The post, which has since gone viral, has drawn attention to the plight of the communities and renewed calls for the government to prioritise the road's reconstruction.
As the rainy season continues, the situation on the road is expected to worsen, raising the urgency of the intervention. The communities are appealing to Governor Makinde and the Federal Government to act swiftly to rehabilitate the road, which is essential for the daily lives of thousands of residents and the economic well-being of the region. The question now is whether the government will respond to the call or whether the road will continue to deteriorate, leaving residents to fend for themselves on a route that has become a symbol of official indifference.
