Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has commended the Department of State Services and other security agencies for the successful rescue of a kidnapped victim and the arrest of three suspects linked to the crime, praising the operation as a demonstration of the effectiveness and dedication of security forces in the fight against criminal elements across the state. The governor gave the commendation on Thursday, August 20, 2026, following a covert operation by DSS operatives that led to the rescue of Joseph Obagwu, who had been held hostage by a kidnap syndicate after he went to secure the release of his son, Samuel Olom Obagwu, a student of the Federal University of Lafia. The operation, which unfolded over several days, saw security operatives dismantle a criminal camp on the outskirts of Atabula village in Aloshi District, Obi Local Government Area of the state, and track down fleeing suspects to a hotel in Lafia.
The ordeal began on August 11, 2026, when Samuel Olom Obagwu, a student of the Federal University of Lafia, was abducted by the kidnap syndicate. In a desperate bid to secure his son's freedom, the father, Joseph Obagwu, paid a ransom of Two Million Naira to the kidnappers. However, in a cruel twist that exposed the treachery of the syndicate, the kidnappers released the son and took the father as a replacement, holding him hostage from August 15, 2026. The traditional ruler of Duduguru community in Jenkwe Development Area of Obi LGA, Chief Pius Ogu, who also commended the DSS, disclosed this disturbing detail, stating that the kidnappers released the son and took in the father as a replacement.
Acting on credible intelligence, DSS operatives stormed the kidnappers' camp in the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, forcing the criminals to flee into nearby bushes. In the process, they successfully rescued Joseph Obagwu, who had been held hostage since August 15, 2026. The operatives thereafter razed the criminals' camp, destroying the hideout that had served as a base for the syndicate's operations. On the same Tuesday, DSS officers arrested three members of the kidnap syndicate at Gidigidi Hotel, behind Shinge Market in Lafia LGA. The suspects were identified as Abdullahi Musa, Titus Baka Fidelis, and Sani Adamu. It was revealed that Adamu had received ₦200,000 from the victim's family as part of the ransom demanded by the syndicate. The security operatives also recovered cash, including five mobile phones and other items believed to be connected to the operation.
Governor Sule, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Addra, described the arrests as a demonstration of the effectiveness and dedication of the security agencies, urging them to sustain the momentum and remain resolute in the fight against criminal elements. The governor assured the security agencies in the state of the continued support of his administration in the discharge of their responsibilities. He also appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and provide timely, credible and useful information to security agencies, stressing that collective vigilance and cooperation are essential to maintaining peace and security in the state.
The operation has brought huge relief to the Duduguru community and the wider Obi LGA, where kidnapping and other forms of violent crime have become a source of fear and insecurity. Chief Pius Ogu, the traditional ruler of Duduguru community, expressed his community's gratitude, stating that the rescue and arrest had brought so much relief to his community. "We used to hear that the DSS has been unrelenting in its effort to wipe out kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes across the country. We witnessed this first hand, and are very happy for it," the traditional ruler declared. He added that as the agency continues to deploy a combination of intelligence-driven operations, sustained surveillance, and strategic collaboration with sister security agencies to track down perpetrators and dismantle their hideouts, the citizens pledge their support to help them continue on this great path.
The rescue operation in Nasarawa comes amid heightened concerns over the rising wave of kidnapping and insecurity across Nigeria, with students, farmers, and ordinary citizens increasingly becoming targets of criminal syndicates demanding huge ransoms. The successful rescue of Joseph Obagwu and the arrest of three suspects underscore the importance of intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration in combating the scourge of kidnapping. The DSS, which has been at the forefront of such operations, has consistently demonstrated its commitment to protecting lives and property, even as it faces challenges of limited resources and the evolving tactics of criminal networks. The commendation by Governor Sule is a recognition of the sacrifices and professionalism of security operatives who risk their lives to rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
The suspects, Abdullahi Musa, Titus Baka Fidelis, and Sani Adamu, are currently in custody for interrogation, according to security sources. They are expected to face charges as investigations continue into their involvement in the kidnapping of Samuel Olom Obagwu and the subsequent abduction of his father, Joseph Obagwu. The recovery of cash, mobile phones, and other items from the suspects is expected to provide further evidence linking them to the crime and possibly to other kidnapping operations in the state. The DSS has not released further details on the investigation, but sources indicate that the agency is working to track down other members of the syndicate who may have fled during the operation.
As Nasarawa State continues to grapple with security challenges, the successful rescue operation and the arrest of the suspects serve as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation and intelligence-sharing in the fight against crime. Governor Sule's appeal to citizens to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies reflects a growing recognition that security is a collective responsibility. The governor's commendation of the DSS and other security agencies also sends a strong signal that the state government is committed to supporting security forces in their efforts to protect lives and property. The rescue of Joseph Obagwu and the arrest of his abductors is a significant victory in the ongoing battle against kidnapping, but it also highlights the need for sustained efforts to address the root causes of insecurity and to build a more secure and prosperous future for all citizens of Nasarawa State.
