The African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has launched a blistering attack on Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over his visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, August 20, 2026, alleging that nearly 50 Osun residents have been killed in election-related violence while the governor celebrated his re-election victory with the President. Sowore, in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, reacted to photographs of Adeleke meeting with Tinubu, describing the governor's visit as a political agreement between the two leaders that had now been sealed. "Governor Ademola Adeleke, the man who has his brains beneath his feet, has now gone to visit his preferred presidential candidate, failed Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu," Sowore wrote.

The AAC candidate then turned his attention to the violence that has marred the electoral process in Osun State, alleging that nearly 50 citizens have lost their lives in election-related incidents. "Meanwhile, nearly 50 Osun citizens have been killed in election-related violence, including another person killed yesterday, sacrificed to his spoilt brat cousin, Davido, near the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo," Sowore alleged. The reference to Davido, the internationally renowned Afrobeats artiste and Adeleke's nephew, added a personal dimension to Sowore's criticism, suggesting that the governor's priorities were misplaced amid the bloodshed.

Adeleke had arrived at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa at approximately 5:25 pm on Thursday, dressed in a navy blue traditional attire and carrying a walking stick, accompanied by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. According to presidential media aide Dada Olusegun, the governor led a delegation to thank President Tinubu over the outcome of the governorship election in Osun State. Adeleke told State House correspondents that the visit was to thank the President for ensuring a free and fair election in the state. The meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between Tinubu and Adeleke since the governor secured a second term in the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

Sowore, however, dismissed this explanation, linking Adeleke's visit to Tinubu to emerging political alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The AAC chieftain criticised Adeleke over his political relationship with Tinubu, suggesting that the understanding between them had now been sealed. His comments come at a time when political realignments are already taking shape ahead of the 2027 general election, with Adeleke's endorsement of Tinubu's re-election bid less than 24 hours after securing victory in the governorship election drawing sharp criticism from opposition figures.

The allegation that nearly 50 Osun residents have been killed in election-related violence has raised serious concerns about the conduct of the electoral process in the state. However, Sowore's claim was not independently verified in reports, and the Osun State Government and security agencies have yet to provide official casualty figures. The timing of Sowore's criticism, coming just days after Adeleke's re-election victory and his subsequent meeting with Tinubu, underscores the deep political divisions that continue to characterise Nigeria's electoral landscape.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the political battle lines are becoming increasingly defined. Sowore's attack on Adeleke reflects a broader opposition strategy to hold the ruling party and its allies accountable for what they describe as the government's failure to protect citizens during electoral processes. The AAC candidate's decision to link the governor's visit to Tinubu with the alleged deaths of Osun residents is a calculated attempt to undermine Adeleke's political legitimacy and cast doubt on the credibility of the electoral process. For the families of those who have lost their lives in election-related violence, the political manoeuvring in Abuja offers little comfort, as they continue to mourn their loved ones while the nation's political elite celebrate their victories and forge alliances for the next electoral cycle.
