The Lagos State Police Command has declared a dispatch rider, Austin Ikenna Adiele, wanted over the disappearance of approximately 35 grammes of gold valued at about N7 million, which was entrusted to him for delivery to a customer in Lagos. Adiele, who reportedly worked with Errand Boys Express Logistics at No. 5 Julius Nnamere Close, Igando, Lagos, allegedly collected the gold for delivery before disappearing and switching off his phone. Following police intervention, the suspect was reportedly traced to Surulere, Lagos, where he was last seen on Monday, August 17, 2026. However, efforts to locate him have reportedly proved unsuccessful, raising concerns about his whereabouts and the missing gold.
The incident, which has been widely reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets, highlights the growing vulnerability of high-value goods in the hands of unregulated logistics operators. The Nigeria Police have appealed to members of the public for information that could assist in locating Adiele in connection with the disappearance. According to information made available to the public, efforts to reach him since his disappearance have reportedly proved unsuccessful, while concerns have heightened over his whereabouts and the location of the missing gold. The police urged anyone with credible information about Adiele's whereabouts or the missing gold to contact 09064811051 or report to the nearest police station. Members of the public were, however, advised not to confront or attempt to apprehend Adiele themselves, but to provide any relevant information to the appropriate authorities. The police said information from the public could assist ongoing efforts to clarify the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and recover the missing gold.
This incident is not isolated. In similar cases, dispatch riders have been accused of absconding with valuable items entrusted to them for delivery. In one recent case, a dispatch rider was arraigned over the alleged theft of gold jewellery in Surulere. In another, a dispatch rider was arrested for selling three iPhones worth N1.7 million entrusted to him for delivery. These recurring incidents raise serious questions about the vetting processes and regulatory oversight of logistics companies in Nigeria. The ease with which a dispatch rider can disappear with high-value items points to significant gaps in the industry's accountability mechanisms. The public is left to bear the financial burden of such losses, while the perpetrators often evade justice.
Adiele's disappearance with the gold, valued at N7 million, represents a significant financial loss for the customer who entrusted him with the delivery. The gold, weighing approximately 35 grammes, is a substantial quantity, and its loss could have devastating consequences for the owner. The fact that Adiele was reportedly traced to Surulere but has since eluded capture suggests that he may have gone into hiding or fled the area. The police have not disclosed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the case, nor have they provided any updates on the progress of their investigation. The public is left to wonder whether Adiele will be apprehended and whether the gold will be recovered. As the search for Adiele continues, the case serves as a cautionary tale for customers who entrust valuable items to dispatch riders. The absence of robust regulatory oversight and the lack of stringent background checks for dispatch riders make such incidents all too common. Until the authorities take decisive action to address these gaps, customers will continue to bear the risk of losing their valuables to unscrupulous operators.
As of the time of this report, no independent confirmation of the story has been obtained by Stone Reporters. Members of the public with credible information about Adiele's whereabouts or the missing gold are urged to contact 09064811051 or report to the nearest police station.
