Thirty years after she first vaulted into gaming history, Lara Croft is making a grand return. The pistol-wielding archaeologist is back in "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis," a complete reimagining of the 1996 original that kicked off one of the most iconic franchises in video game history. Announced at The Game Awards 2025, this release marks the first major entry in the series since 2018 and serves as the centerpiece of the franchise's 30th-anniversary celebrations. Published by Amazon Games and developed jointly by Crystal Dynamics and Polish studio Flying Wild Hog, "Legacy of Atlantis" is not a simple remaster but a ground-up rebuild designed to introduce a new generation to Lara's original quest for the Scion artifact.

The game, powered by Unreal Engine 5, retraces Lara's hunt for the Scion across iconic locations like Peru, Greece, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. A preview shown at Gamescom 2026 offered a glimpse of a 20-minute gameplay sequence set in Greece, where Lara—still in her famous blue top and brown shorts—explored an abandoned tomb, battled panthers, and dodged giant, redesigned swords falling from the ceiling. The environments have been vastly expanded, and the sound design significantly improved. Director Raul Siqueira emphasized that the goal was to adapt and change some elements while staying true to the original's spirit. However, some previews have noted that while the game is visually stunning, the gameplay additions, such as a new skill tree, have drawn mixed reactions, with some critics questioning whether the changes add meaningful value.

Alongside the remake, a second title, "Tomb Raider: Catalyst," is scheduled for a 2027 release. Described by developers as the largest Tomb Raider game to date, "Catalyst" takes Lara to Northern India, where she will navigate dense jungles, mountains, and ancient ruins in a new narrative featuring rival treasure hunters. Both games will feature British actress Alix Wilton Regan as the voice of Lara Croft.

For the creative team, the return to Lara's roots carries significant weight. Siqueira noted that the first "Tomb Raider" had a profound personal impact on him, as it was the first game he played with a female protagonist. This time around, the developers are keen to present Lara as a powerful, nuanced character rather than an object of physical attraction. Art director Arek Tomaszewski stated that the focus is on making her powerful and respected. Gamers of 2026, accustomed to modern controls, would find the original difficult to play, making this remake an essential bridge between the past and present.

The "Legacy of Atlantis" remake arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise, which has seen several iterations over the years. With both "Legacy of Atlantis" and "Catalyst," the series is charting a course that honors its groundbreaking past while building for the future. As Lara Croft prepares to explore tombs and face new challenges, her return is a powerful reminder of the enduring appeal of a character who has inspired generations of gamers.
