A 13-year-old boy, Mubarak Mohd, has tragically lost his life after accidentally shooting himself with a loaded Dane gun in Udubo village, Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m., when the teenager entered the room of a 35-year-old hunter, Suleiman Hamza, who had negligently left his loaded firearm unsecured before stepping out.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the hunter had returned from a hunting trip and left the loaded Dane gun inside his room. The teenager, who was reportedly from the same village, entered the room and pulled the trigger, causing the weapon to discharge and inflict fatal injuries on him. The incident was reported to the police at about 8:45 p.m. by a 50-year-old resident of Udubo village. Detectives attached to the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters were immediately mobilised to the scene. The victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Gamawa, where a medical doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed that photographs were taken at the scene, and the remains were released to the victim's relatives for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. The suspect, Suleiman Hamza, has been arrested, and preliminary investigations have been concluded. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet investigation.
In a related development, the police command also foiled an armed robbery attempt along the Kajala-Kere Road on the outskirts of Burra, recovering two Bajaj motorcycles stolen by suspected robbers. The suspects, armed with cutlasses and sticks, had blocked the road and dispossessed four residents of their belongings before fleeing upon sighting security operatives.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed sadness over the fatal incident and cautioned hunters and other firearm owners to handle weapons with utmost care. He urged firearm owners to ensure that guns are securely kept out of the reach of children to prevent avoidable loss of lives. The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
