A man identified as Tony has been arrested in Abia State following allegations that he sexually abused his 13-year-old biological daughter over several years, a case that has brought the hidden epidemic of incest in Nigeria into sharp focus. The suspect was apprehended by law enforcement after concerns were raised over the alleged abuse of the minor, who reportedly told investigators that the abuse began when she was just nine years old. During questioning, Tony reportedly admitted to having sexual contact with his daughter but claimed that it occurred only twice. His daughter, however, gave investigators a different account, stating that she could not remember the number of times the alleged abuse occurred, adding, "I cannot count how many times he has done it."
The teenager also reportedly identified the suspect as her biological father and said the alleged incidents took place at their home. When asked about her mother's whereabouts during the abuse, the girl said, "he does it at home and I don't know where my mother used to be." She also told investigators that her father gave her nothing in exchange for keeping quiet after the encounters. The suspect's admission, coupled with his daughter's testimony, has raised renewed concerns about the protection of children from sexual abuse within homes and the need for suspected cases to be promptly reported to relevant authorities.
The case is currently under investigation as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations, including when the abuse allegedly began and the extent of the incidents. Appropriate legal and child-protection measures are expected to be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The arrest of the Abia father adds to a growing list of cases in Nigeria involving incest and sexual abuse of minors. In recent months, the police have arrested several men for allegedly defiling their daughters, including a 38-year-old man in Lagos who was arrested for allegedly abusing his 13-year-old stepdaughter, and a 42-year-old father in Ogun State who was arrested for allegedly raping his 13-year-old daughter. The Abia case underscores the urgent need for stronger child protection mechanisms, better reporting channels, and more robust law enforcement to prevent such abuses and ensure that perpetrators face justice.
