The Federal Ministry of Education has officially announced the full automation of academic certificate evaluation and authentication, a sweeping reform that eliminates the need for applicants to physically visit the Ministry for verification services. The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, made the announcement on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, describing the initiative as a major step in the Federal Government's digital transformation agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Under the new system, applicants can now complete the entire credential evaluation and authentication process online through the Ministry's dedicated platform, accessible at essverify.education.gov.ng. The reform is designed to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, accelerate processing, improve transparency, and provide more convenient services to Nigerians and applicants both within and outside the country. The Minister explained that the initiative will strengthen the integrity and credibility of Nigeria's academic certification system while enabling institutions, employers, and other stakeholders to verify qualifications through a more structured and reliable process.
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to using technology to modernise education governance, improve institutional efficiency, and deliver citizen-centred services. He said the automation would also help to curb the activities of fraudulent agents who have exploited the manual verification process to extort money from applicants. The new platform is expected to significantly reduce the time it takes to verify academic credentials, a process that had previously been plagued by long queues, bureaucratic delays, and allegations of corruption.
The announcement comes amid a broader push by the Federal Government to digitise public services and reduce human contact in government processes. The Ministry has advised applicants to use the official credential evaluation and authentication platform and to direct enquiries to ess1@education.gov.ng. The move is expected to be particularly beneficial for Nigerians living abroad, who previously had to travel to Nigeria or rely on third-party agents to verify their academic qualifications.
The automation of certificate verification is a significant milestone in the Federal Government's efforts to restore integrity to Nigeria's education system and eliminate the fraudulent practices that have undermined the credibility of academic qualifications.
