Unidentified gunmen have abducted an officer of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) in Benin City, Edo State, in a brazen attack that has heightened concerns over the safety of public officials in the state. The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the First East Circular Junction along Sokponba Road, when the assailants stormed the location and fired sporadic gunshots into the air.
The attack threw the area into chaos, forcing other EDSTMA officers on duty to abandon their posts and scamper for safety. In the confusion, the gunmen seized one officer and fled the scene. The identity of the abducted officer has not yet been disclosed, and the motive for the attack remains unclear.
The Managing Director of EDSTMA, Engr. Stainless Ijeghede, confirmed the incident and disclosed that efforts were already underway to secure the safe return of the abducted officer. He said the police had been notified and that security operatives had commenced a search for the victim. "We are working with the police to ensure the officer is rescued unhurt," Ijeghede said.
The Edo State Police Command has also been alerted and is reportedly working with other security agencies to track down the abductors and rescue the officer. As of the time of filing this report, no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction, and no ransom demand had been made public. The incident adds to a growing list of security challenges in Edo State, where kidnappings and violent attacks have become increasingly frequent. Residents of the Sokponba Road area have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
