The Lagos State Police Command has ordered officers accused of assaulting a Lagos resident, Olugbenga Adeleke, to appear before the Commissioner of Police after a video in which he described his alleged experience circulated online.
The directive was issued on Friday, 11 September 2026, and concerns officers attached to Ebenezer Police Station in the Alagbado/Ojokoro area of Lagos. The officers and Mr Adeleke are expected at the Lagos State Police Command on Monday, 14 September.
The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the Divisional Police Officer of Ebenezer Police Station had been directed to produce the officers involved before the Commissioner of Police.
Mrs Adebisi said the police had commenced an investigation into the allegations. She said the Command Complaint Response Unit had contacted Mr Adeleke and invited him to provide further information.
According to the police spokesperson, Mr Adeleke had not yet responded to the invitation when the statement was issued. The command said both the complainant and the officers were expected to appear before the Commissioner of Police for further investigation.
Mr Adeleke, a resident of Akera Tide community in the Alakuko/Alagbado area of Lagos State, alleged that he was assaulted, unlawfully detained and extorted by officers attached to Ebenezer Police Station.
He said he had submitted petitions to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and to human rights organisations over the incident.
In the video which circulated on social media, Mr Adeleke alleged that he was stopped by men who were not in police uniform while returning home on 6 September 2026.
He said one of the men struck him in the face before he was told why he had been stopped. He alleged that he was then dragged into a bus and taken to Ebenezer Police Station.
Mr Adeleke said he sustained a serious injury to his eye during the alleged assault. He called on the police authorities to investigate the incident and identify the officers or other persons involved.
He asked the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Police Command, the Inspector-General of Police and human rights organisations to investigate his complaint.
Mr Adeleke called for available evidence, including any CCTV footage, to be preserved. He also asked investigators to interview witnesses and take action against any person found to have acted unlawfully.
He further alleged that other people were brought into the station while he was there and that they were extorted by police officers. Those allegations form part of the complaint now under investigation by the Lagos State Police Command.
The police command did not confirm the allegations against the officers. It said it had commenced an investigation and directed the Divisional Police Officer to produce the officers involved before the Commissioner of Police.
The Command Complaint Response Unit is a police channel established to receive and address complaints against officers. The unit contacted Mr Adeleke after his video began circulating.
The case concerns allegations of assault, unlawful detention and extortion. The officers concerned have not been publicly named, and the police have not announced any disciplinary action, arrest or criminal charge.
The Command said the scheduled appearance on Monday would form part of its inquiry into the complaint. The investigation is expected to examine Mr Adeleke’s account, the officers’ account, station records and any other available evidence.
Mr Adeleke’s allegation that the men who stopped him were not wearing uniforms is also part of the complaint. The police have not issued a public account of the officers’ activities on the day of the alleged incident.
The matter has drawn attention on social media, where users commented on the video and shared their own accounts involving Ebenezer Police Station. Those comments have not been independently verified and do not form part of the police statement.
A human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, called for the arrest and prosecution of any person found responsible for physically assaulting Mr Adeleke.
The police command’s decision to summon the officers follows the circulation of the video and the petitions submitted by the complainant.
The investigation will determine whether the officers acted within the law and police regulations. A finding of wrongdoing requires an investigation and the appropriate disciplinary or judicial process.
The Lagos State Police Command has urged members of the public to use established reporting channels when they have complaints against police officers. The Command Complaint Response Unit remains one of the channels available for such complaints.
Mr Adeleke’s account has placed the conduct of officers at Ebenezer Police Station under public scrutiny. The police command has said the matter is before the Commissioner of Police for further investigation.
The officers remain accused of wrongdoing, while Mr Adeleke remains the complainant in the case. The police have not released the names or ranks of the officers directed to appear.
The outcome of the inquiry has not been announced. The Command has stated that the complainant and officers are expected to attend the police headquarters on Monday, 14 September.
