The Lagos State Government has directed public and private schools across the state to place greater emphasis on safety, cleanliness and healthy practices as pupils and students return for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The directive was issued on Friday, 11 September 2026, by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, ahead of the resumption of schools across Lagos State on Monday, 14 September 2026.
Mr Alli-Balogun welcomed pupils, students, teachers, school administrators, non-teaching staff, parents and other stakeholders to the new academic session.
The commissioner said schools must maintain safe, clean and healthy environments for learners and staff as academic activities resume.
The directive applies to public and private primary and secondary schools across Lagos State.
The resumption date is contained in the state’s harmonised 2026/2027 academic calendar. The calendar was approved after consultations with education stakeholders coordinated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance.
The first term of the academic session begins on Monday, 14 September 2026, and ends on Friday, 18 December 2026. Vacation begins on Monday, 21 December 2026.
The first half of the term runs from Monday, 14 September to Friday, 30 October 2026.
A mid-term break is scheduled from Monday, 2 November to Friday, 6 November 2026.
The second half of the first term begins on Monday, 9 November and ends on Friday, 18 December 2026.
The academic calendar includes an Open Day for primary schools on Thursday, 29 October 2026, and an Open Day for secondary schools on Friday, 30 October 2026.
The calendar also recognises Thursday, 1 October 2026, as Nigeria’s Independence Day public holiday and Monday, 5 October 2026, as World Teachers’ Day.
The state government previously scheduled staff professional development for teachers and school personnel on 10 and 11 September, before the resumption of pupils and students.
The harmonised calendar applies to public and private schools in Lagos State. The state government said the unified schedule supports an organised academic year and promotes compliance with approved education standards.
The Office of Education Quality Assurance is responsible for monitoring standards in Lagos schools. Its work includes school quality assurance, safeguarding, child protection and compliance with state education policies.
The commissioner’s statement places safety, cleanliness and healthy practices at the centre of the resumption process.
Schools are expected to maintain orderly premises, clean classrooms, sanitary facilities and safe learning spaces for pupils, students, teachers and other staff.
School administrators are responsible for ensuring that school environments meet the requirements issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Office of Education Quality Assurance.
The directive includes all categories of school personnel, including teaching and non-teaching staff. It also addresses parents and guardians whose children are returning to school for the new academic year.
Lagos State has one of Nigeria’s largest school populations, with public and private institutions serving learners across the state’s urban, semi-urban and rural communities.
The resumption of schools increases daily movement by pupils, parents, teachers, school buses and other vehicles across Lagos. The harmonised academic calendar provides a common timetable for education stakeholders.
The calendar was finalised after stakeholder meetings involving education officials and representatives of the school sector.
The state government has said the approved timetable supports planning by schools, parents and education administrators.
The 2026/2027 session follows the end of the long vacation. Schools have been directed to resume academic activities in line with the approved calendar.
The state government’s instruction on safety and cleanliness applies throughout the new session.
The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education oversees public primary and secondary education in Lagos, while the Office of Education Quality Assurance monitors standards in both public and private schools.
The commissioner urged stakeholders to work together for a successful academic session.
