Peter Obi Criticizes Federal Government Over Budget Priorities

The Leader of the Labour Party and 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has publicly criticized the federal government’s budgetary priorities, highlighting what he describes as a misplacement of resources in national development.

Obi questioned the rationale behind allocating ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, while teaching hospitals and federal psychiatric centres receive less than ₦100 billion in total.

Writing on his official X handle, Obi said:

“The difference between the success and failure of development in any nation is how you prioritise your scarce resources. The recent announcement that ₦142 billion has been approved for bus terminals further affirms the lack of competence, focus, and leadership. Health, one of the most critical areas of development, remains deteriorating and underfunded. WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues. This is not only a misplaced priority but a tragic irony of our country. This is not governance.”

Obi’s remarks underscore growing public concern over resource allocation in Nigeria, particularly in the healthcare sector. Mental health and hospital funding have long been cited as underfunded areas, affecting millions of citizens nationwide.

The Labour Party leader’s criticism calls attention to the importance of prioritizing healthcare and other critical development sectors, urging government action to align spending with the country’s pressing socio-economic needs.
