Governor Mai Mala Buni Launches 2025 Tree Planting Initiative to Combat Desertification in Yobe State

His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni (CON) of Yobe State, has officially launched the 2025 tree planting programme at his residence on Gujba Road, Damaturu, urging residents to seek permission before cutting trees and warning against actions that could harm the environment.

Speaking at the ceremony themed “Buni’s Plan to Restore Destroyed Plains,” Governor Buni reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating desert encroachment, restoring degraded lands, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Since 2020, the state government has planted millions of seedlings across Yobe to halt the southward advance of the Sahara Desert.

Governor Buni highlighted key initiatives including the establishment of 100-acre Gum Arabic farms per Senate, six climate channels, low oil and gas station divisions, and tree planting projects in collaboration with the World Bank, Africa’s largest bank, and the Great Green Wall programme.

To encourage community involvement, he directed the State Climate Change Standing Committee to institute annual awards for communities, schools, and individuals who demonstrate care and commitment in planting trees. He also called on traditional rulers and security agencies to prevent unlawful tree cutting, warning that violators will face legal consequences.

“Tree cutting without replanting threatens our environment, increases the risk of flooding, and degrades land quality. We must protect and expand the forests we have planted,” the Governor said. He urged citizens, schools, and families to take advantage of this season to plant more trees, emphasising that environmental protection is a collective responsibility aligned with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Governor Buni expressed gratitude to development partners, including the World Bank and the Great Green Wall initiative, for their support in addressing environmental challenges in Yobe State.

Stone Reporters News gathered that this initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Yobe State Government to promote climate resilience, sustainable land management, and community participation in environmental conservation.
