Ondo Government Steps Up Efforts to Boost Power Supply Through Owode Substation Project

The Ondo State Government has intensified efforts to improve electricity supply to underserved areas by engaging top officials from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The high-level meeting, held in Abuja, focused on reviving the Owode 330/132/33 KVA substation project, which has been stalled for several years.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, emphasized the urgency of addressing the state’s power deficit. He revealed that Ondo State currently receives less than 30 megawatts of electricity, despite a demand of approximately 700 megawatts. The Commissioner highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting TCN in completing the Owode substation, a move he described as a “game changer” for electricity distribution in the state.

NERC Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, acknowledged the delays in the project but expressed optimism that the meeting would yield practical solutions to move it forward. Engr. Shehu Aliyu, Executive Director of NISO, outlined ongoing efforts since 2023 to connect the substation, noting that challenges related to Right of Way and bureaucratic approvals had slowed progress. He affirmed the willingness of federal agencies to collaborate with the state to expedite project completion.

The meeting concluded with an agreement for Ondo State to formally request detailed project information and necessary documentation to facilitate timely execution.

The renewed focus on the Owode substation highlights the state government’s proactive approach to addressing infrastructural gaps in the power sector. By leveraging partnerships with federal agencies, Ondo State is aiming to transform its electricity landscape, ensuring that residents and businesses receive reliable energy—a critical factor for economic growth, industrial development, and quality of life. The project’s successful completion could set a benchmark for collaborative power sector initiatives across the country.
