Abuja, Nigeria — The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of Nigeria’s principal political parties, has reached a pivotal moment following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) latest update, which recognizes the faction aligned with Nyesom Wike as the legitimate leadership of the party. This development comes amid months of legal and political battles over control of the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) and has significant implications for the party’s cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP has been split between two rival factions. One camp is loyal to Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which claims authority through a caretaker committee following court rulings that nullified previous conventions. The opposing faction is anchored around Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, asserting continuity as the party’s leadership based on their own convention and internal processes.

INEC’s recognition places Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as Acting National Secretary, along with other members of the National Working Committee. Officials from this faction attended INEC’s political parties consultative meetings, which are mandatory for official party representation. Their presence has been interpreted as a formal acknowledgment of their leadership role by the electoral commission.

This decision marks a significant shift for INEC, which had previously withheld recognition pending clarification of the internal disputes within the PDP. The Wike-aligned caretaker committee was constituted to stabilize the party and organize pending congresses and conventions following the expiration of the previous NWC’s tenure.

The Turaki-led faction has responded by condemning INEC’s apparent recognition of the Wike group, labeling it unconstitutional and in violation of party regulations. They have vowed to pursue all legal avenues to contest the commission’s position, arguing that the caretaker committee lacks proper statutory and constitutional backing. Meanwhile, the Wike faction maintains that their leadership is legitimate, citing court decisions supporting their authority and the necessity of steering the party ahead of upcoming elections.

The dispute is rooted in long-standing tensions within the PDP, including disagreements over party direction, perceived imbalances in power, and competing strategies in preparation for national elections. Both factions have engaged in legal battles seeking recognition and asserting the validity of their respective conventions. The ongoing litigation means the party remains internally divided, with both camps claiming legitimacy.

INEC has consistently urged both factions to resolve their differences through internal mechanisms or the courts, emphasizing that disputes must be settled transparently to maintain the party’s operational integrity and electoral readiness. The commission’s latest move to recognize the Wike-led leadership provides temporary clarity for administrative and consultative purposes but does not end the broader conflict over party control.

The crisis has disrupted PDP operations, including plans for primaries, candidate registration, and campaign coordination, creating uncertainty for governors, senators, and other party leaders. Efforts to mediate between the factions have so far yielded limited success, highlighting the depth of the divisions.

Political observers note that the outcome of these internal struggles will influence the PDP’s strength as an opposition party and its ability to compete effectively in future elections. The party’s coherence and unity will be critical in shaping Nigeria’s broader political landscape in the lead-up to the 2027 polls.

As legal proceedings and negotiations continue, the PDP faces the challenge of reconciling its factions to present a united front. The recognition by INEC provides a degree of operational legitimacy for the Wike-led committee, but the resolution of lingering disputes remains central to the party’s prospects and stability.
