Osogbo, Osun State – In the lead‑up to the 2026 Osun State governorship election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, has called on broadcasters and media practitioners to uphold professionalism, fairness, and accuracy in election reporting. The call was made during a one‑day workshop organised by the National Broadcasting Commission in Osun, themed “Upholding Principles of Fairness, Accuracy and Impartiality in Election Coverage: INEC’s Expectations from Broadcasters Before, During and After Elections.”
The workshop gathered media professionals, civil society actors, and electoral stakeholders to equip broadcasters with the knowledge and ethical framework necessary to support a credible and peaceful electoral process. Dr. Agboke emphasised the vital role of the media in providing accurate information, civic education, and public engagement, highlighting that responsible journalism shapes voter perception and maintains trust in the electoral system.
Ahead of the election, Dr. Agboke urged broadcasters to provide verified information on electoral timelines, voter registration, Permanent Voter Card collection, and campaign guidelines. He stressed the importance of equitable media access for all political parties and warned against spreading unverified content that could create confusion or mistrust among voters.
During the election, he highlighted the sensitivity of real‑time reporting, advising media practitioners to avoid publishing unofficial results or projections that could incite tension. Broadcasters were encouraged to focus on clarity, context, and professionalism, supporting voter understanding of accreditation and voting processes without escalating disagreements or disputes.
After the polls, Dr. Agboke called for continued responsible reporting, urging media outlets to cover results, disputes, and judicial processes impartially. He noted that media coverage at this stage can either reinforce peace or deepen divisions, and he encouraged balanced narratives that respect legal procedures and promote unity.
In addition to engaging the media, INEC in Osun has held meetings with political parties, civil society groups, and security agencies to reinforce collaborative efforts for credible elections. These engagements emphasise the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to adhere to electoral guidelines and prevent violence or manipulation.
Dr. Agboke’s remarks reflect INEC’s broader strategy of proactive outreach and public education in preparation for the governorship election. The commission continues to highlight the importance of voter mobilisation, civic awareness, and adherence to electoral rights and responsibilities. Media practitioners in Osun are called upon not only to report events but to act as partners in the democratic process, ensuring accurate, balanced, and professional coverage that informs and reassures the electorate.
