The Adamawa State Government has announced the resignation of two commissioners, both of whom stepped down to pursue elective positions in the 2027 general elections. Chief Felix Tangwami, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture Development, Tijjani Maksha, formally resigned from the State Executive Council with immediate effect. The development was disclosed on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, during a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa George Farauta at the Government House in Yola.
Briefing journalists shortly after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. James Iliya, confirmed that the two former commissioners resigned voluntarily to enable them to actively participate in the upcoming electoral cycle. Their departure from the cabinet is a significant move, as both officials were considered key players in the state’s governance structure. Their decision to step down brings the total number of commissioners who have left the cabinet in recent months to at least three, following the earlier resignation of Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who stepped down from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development on March 2, 2026.
The resignations came less than 48 hours after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and a substantial number of his appointees, including over 20 commissioners and special advisers, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). While the state government has not tied the resignations directly to the governor’s defection, the timing suggests that the two commissioners may be seeking to align their political futures with the new ruling party or to contest on other platforms. A significant number of lawmakers had also earlier resigned from the PDP, citing the party’s lingering internal crisis.
The departures are a clear indication that the political landscape of Adamawa State is undergoing a major realignment as the 2027 elections draw nearer. The state is now poised to see a reshuffling of the cabinet to fill the vacancies created by the resignations. The two former commissioners have not yet announced which elective offices they intend to contest.
The State Executive Council also used the meeting to approve a substantial N7,066,907,070 (over N7 billion) for the renovation of examination halls, classrooms, offices, and perimeter fencing of selected secondary and primary schools across the state. The government stated that the project is intended to provide a conducive learning environment for students and improve the quality of education. Furthermore, the council approved N459,694,685.85 for the supply and installation of 20 kilometres of water distribution pipelines in Mubi town. The Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. Ayuba Audu Tanko, explained that Mubi has not had a functional water supply since 1989, a situation that has repeatedly exposed residents to outbreaks of water‑borne diseases such as cholera.
In addition, the meeting ratified N147,958,358.97 for the development of a water supply network at the newly constructed Yola Main Market in Yola South Local Government Area. Another N149,707,497.00 was approved for the upgrade of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Damare, Girei Local Government Area, to create a better living environment for displaced persons. The council also expressed concern over low compliance with the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise and urged residents to take the exercise more seriously to improve hygiene and prevent disease outbreaks across the state.
The resignations of Tangwami and Maksha mark the end of their tenure in the state’s health and livestock sectors. While the government has yet to announce their successors, the legislature is expected to begin the screening and confirmation process for new commissioner-nominees once the governor forwards their names. Political analysts note that the upcoming replacement of the commissioners will be closely watched as it will provide further clues about the evolving political alliances within the state as the 2027 elections approach. For the two former commissioners, the path ahead is now focused on the campaign trail, leaving behind the ministries they helmed and the unfinished projects they oversaw.
