Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has successfully resolved the lingering political dispute within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano North Senatorial District following a series of high‑level meetings with party stakeholders. The reconciliation effort, which received the direct intervention and support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, led to a consensus arrangement between Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo (ATM) and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
As part of the agreement reached, ATM Gwarzo officially withdrew his senatorial ambition in support of Senator Barau ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a formal withdrawal letter submitted to the party leadership, Gwarzo reaffirmed his loyalty and commitment to the APC. Speaking after the meeting, Gwarzo described himself as a loyal party member who would always respect the collective decision of the party leadership. He said he could not reject the appeal and intervention of President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and Governor Yusuf, noting that the three leaders worked tirelessly to ensure peace and consensus within the APC in Kano State.
Responding, Senator Barau said ATM Gwarzo had demonstrated maturity, respect, and a strong sense of mutual understanding. The Deputy Senate President assured that they would continue to work together for the unity and progress of the APC. Governor Yusuf, who convened the stakeholders’ meeting, commended both leaders for showing sacrifice, understanding, and commitment to the unity of the party. He said the resolution would further strengthen the APC in Kano and across the country. The statement was signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The Kano North Senatorial District has been a theatre of intense political rivalry, with the dispute threatening to split the party’s base in one of the most populous and politically significant regions of the state. The intervention of President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and Governor Yusuf was seen as critical in preventing a protracted intra‑party conflict that could have affected the APC’s electoral fortunes in the 2027 general elections. The withdrawal of ATM Gwarzo, a prominent political figure in the district, clears the path for Senator Barau to seek re‑election without internal opposition.
Earlier, Governor Yusuf had resolved a similar dispute in Kano Central Senatorial District, where a former governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, emerged as the APC consensus candidate for the zone. That earlier resolution, brokered through the same collaborative framework involving the state and federal leadership, has been hailed as a model for internal conflict management within the party. With both Kano Central and Kano North now settled, the APC in Kano State appears increasingly unified ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
The resolution of the Kano North dispute has been welcomed by party members and political observers alike. Many see it as a sign of the growing maturity of the APC’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms and a testament to the influence of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in calming political tensions. Governor Yusuf has been praised for his even‑handed approach and his ability to bring warring factions to the negotiating table. The development also underscores the importance of consensus‑building in Nigerian politics, where open primaries and direct contests often lead to litigation, defections, and weakened party structures.
As the APC consolidates its hold on Kano State, the focus now shifts to the party’s primaries and the broader campaign for the 2027 elections. With Senator Barau now positioned as the consensus candidate for Kano North, and Senator Shekarau leading the ticket in Kano Central, the APC has significantly reduced the risk of post‑primary legal battles and internal sabotage. For President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, the successful mediation in Kano represents a strategic victory, ensuring that the party’s base in Nigeria’s second most populous state remains solid ahead of the next national election.
