As part of preparations to host the 10th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), alongside delegates from the National Sports Commission (NSC), conducted a two-day inspection tour of sporting facilities across Lagos State. The exercise reflects the state government’s commitment, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to youth empowerment through sports and education.
The inspection began at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, before proceeding to the National Stadium and other key venues, including the Elegbata Sports Complex, Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Tafawa Balewa Square, Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, University of Lagos Sports Complex, CMS Grammar School, Bariga, and Agege Stadium.
At a brief meeting with NSC delegates, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of LSSC, emphasized the importance of the NYG for athletes below the age of 15, assuring full readiness to host one of the best editions in the history of the games. He highlighted the role of sports in fostering life skills, purpose, and national unity, particularly in the lead-up to another national election.
Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu, Head of the NSC delegation and Director of Grassroots Sports Development, noted that part of the hosting assessment is to identify facilities that need improvement, ensuring smooth operations if Lagos is awarded hosting rights.
The National Youth Games, established in 2013, is a grassroots development programme aimed at unearthing raw talent, promoting sportsmanship, and providing scholarship opportunities for young athletes. Hosting the NYG not only benefits the U-15 athletes, but also spotlights Lagos State’s iconic sports infrastructure, culture, and status as Nigeria’s commercial hub. The event is a platform to showcase Nigeria to the world, while reinforcing the government’s commitment to youth empowerment through education and sports development.
Lagos State’s bid to host the 10th National Youth Games demonstrates its readiness, infrastructure capacity, and vision for youth development. Through strategic preparation, facility upgrades, and collaborative efforts with the NSC, the state aims to deliver a historic, well-organized event that will nurture talent, foster unity, and enhance Nigeria’s sporting legacy.
