A fresh wave of violence has struck north-western Nigeria after suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group reportedly launched a nighttime assault on Illo town in Kebbi State, setting the main police station on fire and forcing residents into panic. The attack, which reportedly occurred overnight, is the latest in a series of escalating security incidents linked to the extremist group operating across parts of Nigeria’s north-west and the wider Sahel region.

Initial reports from local sources indicate that the attackers arrived under the cover of darkness and targeted security infrastructure in the town, particularly the police facility believed to serve as the main law-enforcement base for the area. Witness accounts suggest the attackers overwhelmed the location and set the building ablaze before fleeing. Details about casualties or arrests were still emerging at the time of reporting, and security authorities had yet to issue a comprehensive official statement regarding the scale of damage or whether officers were injured during the raid.

Residents said the sudden attack caused widespread fear throughout Illo, a quiet town in Bagudo Local Government Area near the border with the Niger Republic. Many families reportedly fled their homes during the assault as gunshots rang out and flames from the burning police station lit up the night sky. By the time the attackers retreated from the town, the police facility had already been badly damaged by the fire.

Security experts say the Lakurawa group has been expanding its activities in parts of Kebbi and neighbouring states over the past few years. The militant network is believed to operate across Nigeria’s north-western border regions and is thought to have connections with extremist groups active across the Sahel, including armed factions in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. The group’s cross-border movement allows fighters to retreat into remote territories after carrying out attacks, making it difficult for security forces to track them.

The assault on Illo also comes only days after another deadly attack in Kebbi State involving suspected Lakurawa gunmen. During that earlier incident, armed fighters reportedly stormed a police checkpoint along the Bakinruwa–Maje corridor in Bagudo Local Government Area, killing two police officers and burning the checkpoint structure. The attackers were said to have opened fire on the officers before setting the security facility ablaze and escaping into nearby forests.

Authorities in Kebbi confirmed that two officers lost their lives in that attack and said security agencies had launched an investigation and intensified patrols in the affected areas. The repeated targeting of police infrastructure has raised concerns that militant groups may be attempting to weaken security presence in rural communities before expanding their operations further.

Over the past year, several communities across Kebbi State have reported attacks attributed to Lakurawa militants. Local investigations indicate that these assaults often involve large groups of fighters who arrive on motorcycles and carry out coordinated raids on villages, markets, mosques and security posts.

One of the most devastating incidents linked to the group occurred earlier this year when suspected Lakurawa fighters invaded villages in Arewa Local Government Area of the state, killing dozens of residents and rustling large numbers of cattle before fleeing. The attack left many families displaced and prompted renewed calls for stronger security intervention in border communities.

Another violent episode took place in Maiyama Local Government Area when militants reportedly attacked worshippers during evening prayers at a mosque. Several people were killed in that incident while others were injured as the attackers fled the area shortly after the assault.

The Lakurawa network itself has evolved from what security analysts describe as a combination of armed criminal gangs and extremist militant factions operating across the Sahel region. Over time, the group adopted a more organised structure and began carrying out coordinated attacks targeting government institutions, security forces and civilian populations.

Authorities later classified the group as a terrorist organisation following a series of deadly attacks across north-western Nigeria. The designation allows Nigerian security agencies to deploy expanded military operations and counter-terrorism strategies against the group.

Despite ongoing military operations across the region, militants have continued to exploit remote terrain and porous international borders to evade capture. Vast forests stretching across northern Nigeria and neighbouring countries provide cover for armed groups, enabling them to regroup and plan further attacks.

Residents in Illo and surrounding communities say the latest incident highlights the vulnerability of small towns to well-armed militant groups. Many locals have expressed frustration over what they describe as insufficient security presence in rural areas near the international border.

Community leaders are now urging both state and federal authorities to deploy more troops and establish permanent military or police bases in vulnerable border communities. They argue that stronger security infrastructure would deter attackers and enable faster response when threats emerge.

Security analysts have also emphasised the need for stronger cross-border cooperation between Nigeria and neighbouring countries in the Sahel region. Because militant groups often move across national boundaries, coordinated intelligence sharing and joint security operations are seen as critical to disrupting their networks.

As investigations into the Illo attack continue, residents remain anxious about the possibility of further raids. For many families living in the region, the overnight assault serves as another reminder of the ongoing security challenges facing communities across north-western Nigeria.
