Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in coordination with the Nigerian Air Force, have reportedly killed at least 61 fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a foiled infiltration attempt in Malam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, according to sources involved in the operation.
Eyewitnesses and military sources said the insurgents advanced on foot and deployed drones in an effort to breach defensive positions held by soldiers stationed in the area. The attackers aimed to overrun military positions, but troops responded with coordinated ground fire and precision airstrikes, ultimately forcing the militants to retreat in disarray.
Military officials reported that the integration of air and ground operations was central to the success of the mission, with the Nigerian Air Force delivering several targeted strikes on concentrated insurgent formations. Additional aerial support from allied forces helped to disrupt the retreating insurgents and limit their operational capabilities.
The operation is part of ongoing counterinsurgency efforts in Borno State, where ISWAP and other extremist groups continue to pose a serious threat despite years of sustained military campaigns. Security analysts note that the high number of insurgents neutralised underscores both the resilience of militant groups and the effectiveness of intelligence-driven, joint operations in degrading their capacity.
Local communities in northern Borno have expressed cautious optimism following the announcement, though many remain concerned about the broader impact of insurgency on daily life, including threats to farming, trade, and movement. Humanitarian agencies continue to highlight the challenges posed by prolonged insecurity in the region.
Authorities have stated that ongoing surveillance, patrols, and coordinated operations are essential to preventing militants from re-establishing footholds in vulnerable areas. They have also emphasised the importance of community cooperation and intelligence sharing in ensuring continued success against insurgent networks.
While the operation represents a tactical victory for the Nigerian military, officials acknowledge that the broader conflict in Borno remains unresolved, requiring sustained pressure on insurgent groups and continued engagement with affected communities.
