In a major law enforcement success, the Ondo State Police Command has dismantled a suspected car theft syndicate in Akure, arresting two men and recovering a stolen Toyota Camry following a targeted investigation and intelligence‑led operation. The Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal, announced the development on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.

The case began when the police received a complaint on 27 February 2026 from Adeyemi Robert, who reported that on 14 February 2026 he had attended a social event on Sijuade Street in Akure and parked his custom‑coloured Toyota Camry saloon with registration number AH173WWD in front of the venue. Upon returning from the event, Robert discovered that his vehicle had been stolen by unknown persons.

Following the report, detectives from the Ondo State Police Command launched an investigation, deploying a combination of intelligence gathering, surveillance, and other investigative methods to track down the stolen vehicle and apprehend those responsible. The operation reflects a growing emphasis by police on proactive crime‑fighting techniques that link community reporting with strategic follow‑ups.

Through these investigative efforts, operatives traced the missing Camry to Awolo Akingbade, a 40‑year‑old man who was found in possession of the vehicle. He was promptly invited for questioning. Subsequent inquiries revealed that Akingbade had purchased the stolen car from another suspect, Adeyemi David, who was subsequently arrested. Preliminary findings suggest that David stole the Camry and sold it to Akingbade, enabling the theft syndicate to profit from the disposal of the stolen property.

The recovered Toyota Camry was brought to the police station as evidence, and both suspects have cooperated with detectives, providing information that is expected to support the ongoing prosecution. Upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspects were charged with conspiracy, stealing, and receiving stolen property, offences that carry significant legal penalties under Nigerian law.

Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal praised the operatives involved for their diligence, professionalism, and commitment to public safety. He reiterated the Command’s pledge to continue safeguarding lives and property in Ondo State, warning that individuals engaged in criminal activities will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice. Lawal emphasised the importance of citizen cooperation and encouraged the public to provide timely, credible, and actionable information to assist the police in preventing and combating crime.

Vehicle theft remains a persistent concern in southern Nigeria, where stolen cars are sometimes resold locally or moved across state lines. The recovery of the Toyota Camry and the arrests in Akure underscore the importance of swift investigative action and highlight how collaboration between victims, community members, and law enforcement can lead to successful outcomes. Legal proceedings for the arrested suspects are ongoing, with evidence gathered during the investigation expected to be presented in court.

Beyond this case, police commands across Nigeria continue to innovate in approaches to combating vehicle theft, leveraging intelligence, data, and inter-agency collaboration to disrupt criminal networks. Public awareness on preventive measures, such as securing vehicles with anti-theft devices and promptly reporting theft to authorities, remains a critical part of the strategy to reduce incidents.

As the Ondo State Police Command builds on this success, officials reaffirmed their commitment to sustained vigilance and community partnership, ensuring residents feel safer and offenders face consequences for criminal actions.
