Early Wednesday morning, residents of Aso A and Aso‑Pada communities in Mararaba, near Abuja, came under attack by suspected armed herdsmen. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants opened fire on villagers, killed residents, and set homes ablaze, causing widespread panic and forcing many families to flee for safety. The violence follows an earlier attack in the same area, intensifying fears among locals.
Community members described chaotic scenes as the attackers moved through the settlement with firearms and machetes, targeting unarmed residents and destroying property. Several people were reported killed, while many others sustained injuries or remain unaccounted for. Some families abandoned their homes, leaving behind livestock, food supplies, and personal belongings as they sought refuge in nearby towns and bushland.
The attack reportedly stemmed from disputes over land, grazing rights, and previous confrontations between herders and farmers in the region, though authorities are still investigating the exact triggers. Local residents expressed deep distress over repeated outbreaks of violence and the inability of security forces to prevent such attacks.
Nasarawa State has experienced recurring insecurity, including attacks, kidnappings, and clashes between armed groups, bandits, and herders. Border communities near Abuja have been particularly vulnerable, with prior incidents causing fatalities, property destruction, and large-scale displacement of residents.
Security forces have deployed police and military units to the area to restore order and pursue the attackers. Traditional rulers, civic leaders, and community vigilante coordinators have called for urgent intervention by the state government and federal security agencies, demanding increased patrols, reinforced checkpoints, and preventive measures to protect residents.
Church leaders, civil society groups, and humanitarian organisations have urged dialogue between farmers, herders, and authorities to address underlying tensions and prevent further violence. Meanwhile, hospitals and clinics in Mararaba and surrounding areas are preparing to treat the injured, and displaced residents continue to seek shelter and safety until security improves.
The full casualty figures remain uncertain, and investigations are ongoing as authorities work to restore peace and stability in the affected communities.
