Nigeria is observing its 2026 National Police Day, an annual event that honours law enforcement officers and promotes collaboration between the police and the communities they serve. The celebration highlights the role of policing in maintaining public safety and building trust, while recognising the sacrifices made by officers across the nation.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has emphasised the importance of police visibility, engagement with communities, and accountability as part of this year’s activities. The national event, scheduled to culminate on April 7, 2026, includes ceremonies, parades, and outreach initiatives aimed at showcasing professional conduct and fostering mutual understanding between citizens and law enforcement.

The Nigerian Police Force, established in 1930, operates across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with responsibility for maintaining internal security and public order. National Police Day offers an opportunity to celebrate officers’ contributions, engage the public on security issues, and encourage dialogue about reforms and improvements in policing practices.

In Kwara State, the Police Command has outlined a series of programmes in line with this year’s theme, “Community Partnership: Building Trust.” Activities began on March 30 with a sanitation and environmental cleaning exercise across Ilorin metropolis and a medical outreach programme at Yoruba Market Road. On March 31, a Walkathon for Peace and Public Safety was conducted to foster unity and promote non-violent coexistence.

On April 1, community engagement and sensitisation sessions were held to address electoral violence and safe driving practices. April 2 featured a presentation of support cheques to the families of officers who lost their lives in service, acknowledging their dedication and sacrifice. The celebrations will conclude with a grand ceremonial parade and tactical display in Abuja on April 7, highlighting operational capability and professionalism within the force.

The 2026 Police National Day underscores ongoing efforts to improve police-community relations, promote public safety, and build confidence in law enforcement institutions. The event is also part of a broader strategy to strengthen accountability, recognise service, and foster sustainable peace across Nigeria.

The Kwara State Police Command has invited the public, community leaders, stakeholders, and partner organisations to participate in these activities to support collective security and trust-building initiatives. Citizens are encouraged to engage with police-led programmes and remain informed through official communication channels for updates and guidance.

For enquiries, the Police Public Relations Officer can be contacted, while the Complaint Response Unit and emergency Control Room remain available for reports and urgent assistance.
