The Nigerian Navy has intensified its campaign against fuel smuggling and illegal refining in the Niger Delta, reporting a significant interdiction in Rivers State as part of Operation Delta Sentinel. This initiative focuses on curbing petroleum-related crimes along the nation’s waterways and has achieved multiple operational successes in recent weeks.

Naval personnel, acting on intelligence, conducted patrols in waterways around Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo. During these patrols, the Navy intercepted two wooden boats carrying approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil. Eight suspects were apprehended, while several others fled on sighting the patrol teams. The seized fuel and suspects are now in custody pending further investigation and prosecution.

In a related interception, naval teams also seized around 15,000 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products in the Abua-Odual and Ogbologo areas. These consignments, loaded in unregistered vessels, were seized during patrols by anti-bunkering units operating under the same directive.

Officials said these operations reflect enhanced intelligence gathering and an increased operational tempo aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of movement in Nigeria’s inland waterways. The Nigerian Navy emphasized that illegal refining and fuel theft not only undermine government revenue but also pose environmental and security risks, particularly in the Niger Delta region.

Operation Delta Sentinel is part of a broader multi-agency campaign targeting economic sabotage in the region. Criminal networks in the Niger Delta often tap pipelines and refine stolen crude in makeshift camps along creeks and rivers. Suspects apprehended during such operations are handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution under anti-bunkering and petroleum laws.

Communities in Rivers State have often experienced the negative impact of illegal fuel activities, including environmental degradation and health hazards. Local residents and civil society groups have urged authorities to sustain enforcement while also providing alternative livelihood opportunities to reduce local complicity in fuel smuggling.

The Nigerian Navy’s recent successes build on earlier operations, which have dismantled illegal refineries, confiscated stolen crude and refined products, and apprehended numerous suspects. Maritime analysts note that while these efforts have been effective, fuel smuggling networks remain extensive and adaptive, often using hidden routes and shallow creeks that are difficult to monitor.

The Navy’s interdictions are part of a coordinated effort with other security agencies, including the army and air force, to dismantle illegal refining hubs and arrest individuals involved in oil theft. These combined operations have led to the seizure of significant volumes of stolen petroleum products, destruction of illegal facilities, and prosecution of suspects.

Authorities stress that continuous patrols, intelligence sharing, inter-agency collaboration, and community engagement are critical to sustaining pressure on criminal networks. The Nigerian Navy has pledged to maintain and intensify Operation Delta Sentinel, ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s maritime domain and critical oil assets.
