Abductors of eight worshippers from Omugo community in Oro-Ago District of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, have reportedly reduced their ransom demand from one billion naira to one hundred and fifty million naira, in a development that has intensified concern over worsening insecurity in the region.

Spokesperson of concerned citizens of the community, Jimoh Olaitan, disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Ilorin on Thursday stating that the victims were abducted on March 22 during a service at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA).

He said the community has been deserted as residents flee in large numbers due to fear of further attacks leaving only local vigilantes and hunters to guard abandoned properties amid absence of active police personnel at the community police post.

He further explained that the abductors initially demanded one billion naira before later reducing the figure to one hundred and fifty million naira insisting that the reduced amount remains the condition for the release of the victims.

Olaitan appealed for urgent intervention from government authorities and security agencies to secure the release of the abducted worshippers and restore safety in the community calling for coordinated rescue operations involving federal state and local actors.

He also urged deployment of additional police personnel and logistics to the area activation of the existing police post and establishment of a permanent Joint Task Force base in Omugo to strengthen security presence.

He added that residents are calling for integration of local vigilantes and hunters into formal security structures to improve intelligence gathering and community protection against armed groups operating in the area.

The development reflects growing insecurity across parts of Kwara State where rural communities have faced repeated attacks kidnappings and displacement particularly in border areas with limited security infrastructure and sparse policing coverage.

Security observers note that ransom negotiations have become increasingly common in prolonged kidnapping cases often leaving families and communities under severe financial and psychological pressure while authorities continue search-and-rescue efforts.

Authorities and local leaders have continued to call for enhanced deployment of security personnel and improved intelligence coordination to curb abductions while emphasizing community cooperation in providing timely information to security agencies.

fears in Omugo and surrounding settlements many of which have experienced gradual depopulation as residents move to safer locations leaving behind farms and properties due to sustained threats from armed groups.

While authorities have pledged support for rescue operations there remains growing concern among residents that delayed intervention could worsen humanitarian and economic conditions in affected rural communities across the district.

Local security sources indicate that the area has long struggled with sporadic attacks linked to armed criminal groups operating across forested corridors with difficult terrain often limiting rapid response by security agencies and enabling escape routes for perpetrators.

Analysts say kidnapping for ransom has become a persistent security challenge in parts of north central Nigeria driven by a combination of economic hardship weak rural surveillance and the presence of loosely coordinated armed networks exploiting ungoverned spaces.

In Kwara State particularly in riverine and border communities residents have repeatedly called for expanded policing infrastructure improved road access and sustained deployment of security personnel to prevent attackers from exploiting isolated settlements.

Community leaders have also emphasized the importance of integrating local vigilante groups with formal security architecture arguing that local knowledge of terrain can significantly enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities during attacks.

Despite repeated military and police interventions in the region insecurity persists with many rural dwellers expressing concerns that armed groups continue to exploit gaps in surveillance and limited security presence across vast rural landscapes.

The Federal and State Governments have in recent years introduced various initiatives aimed at strengthening rural security including joint task force deployments and community policing strategies designed to improve early warning systems.

However implementation challenges including logistics constraints difficult terrain and insufficient manpower continue to limit the effectiveness of these interventions in some of the most vulnerable rural communities.

Residents of Omugo and surrounding villages have urged authorities to prioritise the swift rescue of abducted worshippers while ensuring long-term security solutions to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in the area.

Security experts caution that prolonged hostage situations can worsen humanitarian conditions in affected communities particularly when families are forced to negotiate under pressure without adequate institutional support or timely rescue operations.

Authorities have reiterated assurances that efforts are ongoing to track down the abductors and dismantle criminal networks operating in forested corridors across Kwara State and adjoining regions.

The situation continues to generate concern among civil society groups who have called for stronger coordination between security agencies and local communities to address the underlying drivers of rural insecurity.

Human rights observers have also highlighted the psychological toll on displaced families noting that repeated attacks and forced displacement have disrupted education livelihoods and social cohesion in affected areas.

As security operations continue residents remain cautiously optimistic that sustained military presence combined with community cooperation will gradually restore stability to Omugo and neighbouring settlements.

The Kwara State Government has previously stated that it is working with security agencies to strengthen surveillance in rural communities and improve response mechanisms to reports of abductions particularly in remote border areas where access remains limited during emergencies.

Officials say efforts are also being made to revive dormant police posts expand community policing programs and encourage greater intelligence sharing between residents and security agencies to improve early detection of threats and prevent future attacks.

While the ransom reduction has raised cautious attention among residents community representatives stress that the situation remains extremely fragile with ongoing fear displacement and uncertainty continuing to affect daily life and economic activities in the area.

Local stakeholders continue to call for a comprehensive security overhaul that combines rapid response capabilities improved rural infrastructure and sustained community engagement to ensure that vulnerable settlements are protected and displaced families can safely return to their homes in the near future.
