The Presidency has firmly rejected widespread reports that President Bola Tinubu sacked the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, clarifying that both officials voluntarily resigned from their positions. In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Edun formally submitted his resignation on health grounds before President Tinubu announced his replacement on Tuesday. The statement also noted that Dangiwa similarly tendered his resignation and expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.

According to Onanuga, Edun, who turned 70 on Monday and has battled recent ill health, fittingly submitted his resignation letter on his birthday. “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” his letter read. “Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future”. On Tuesday, before the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced his departure from the cabinet, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Presidential Villa, held an hour-long discussion with him, and then left to focus on his private businesses.

The Presidency did not give specific reasons for Dangiwa’s resignation, but noted that he similarly stepped down willingly and thanked President Tinubu for the privilege of serving in the cabinet. President Tinubu has since expressed deep appreciation to both former ministers for their dedicated service and significant contributions to the administration’s economic reform programme and housing development agenda, wishing them continued success in their future endeavours. Meanwhile, the President has charged the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing reforms and advance the administration’s fiscal and economic objectives with renewed focus, discipline, and innovation. Tinubu is also expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma as the new Minister of Housing to the Senate for confirmation.
