The Federal Government has announced the passing of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, describing his death as a monumental loss to the country’s foreign service. Lele, a career diplomat and director in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Middle East and Gulf Division, died in Ankara, Turkey, after a prolonged illness. He was 50. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death occurred in the early hours of April 19, 2026, while he was receiving treatment abroad. His passing came just weeks after President Bola Tinubu appointed him as Nigeria’s envoy to Algeria, following the Senate’s confirmation of his nomination.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, described Lele as a dedicated, meticulous, and exemplary diplomat who served the nation with steadfast loyalty and distinction. “The late Ambassador Lele, until his death after a protracted illness, was the Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the statement read. “Ambassador Lele, a career diplomat, was recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Ambassador-Designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, following the Nigerian Senate’s confirmation of his nomination.”

Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, before joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. Over the course of his career, he served in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Germany; Lomé, Togo; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The ministry noted that Lele was widely respected for his intellectual depth, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received Lele’s remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He described the late envoy as “a hardworking, humble and fine officer, who will be sorely missed by the ministry.” Senior ministry officials accompanied the body before it was transported to Kano, where Lele was buried on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to Lele’s immediate family, friends, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State. “Therefore, his sudden demise is a monumental loss not only to his immediate family, but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Ebienfa said. The ministry prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength for his loved ones during this difficult time.

Lele’s death has cast a shadow over Nigeria’s diplomatic corps, with colleagues and officials describing him as a seasoned diplomat whose contributions had shaped Nigeria’s engagement with countries in the Middle East and beyond. He leaves behind a legacy of diligence, professionalism, and strategic insight.
