A newly converted Muslim hunter, Jamilu popularly known as Jully, has been tragically killed in a fierce clash with bandits in the Masaku axis of Kankara Local Government Area, Katsina State, on Thursday evening, 30 April 2026. According to local sources and vigilante networks, Jamilu, who embraced Islam only two weeks ago, was among several brave vigilantes who lost their lives while confronting a large group of heavily armed bandits that had invaded the community. The clash, which lasted several hours, also left an unspecified number of bandits dead or injured before the criminals retreated into the surrounding forest.
Community leaders described Jamilu’s sacrifice as a profound testament to his newfound faith and commitment to protecting his people. Friends and relatives said that despite being a recent convert, he had quickly become an active and fearless member of the local vigilante group, volunteering for dangerous patrols and night watches. “He found Allah, and he gave his life defending his neighbours. That is the highest form of honour,” a community elder told our reporter. Several other vigilantes were also confirmed dead in the encounter, but their names had not been released as of Friday morning pending family notifications.
The attack in Masaku axis is the latest in a long series of bandit raids that have turned rural Katsina into a killing field. Kankara LGA, in particular, has witnessed repeated attacks, including the notorious 2021 abduction of over 300 schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School. Despite military operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, bandits continue to target farming communities, rustle cattle, and kidnap for ransom. The vigilantes, often poorly armed but highly motivated, serve as a first line of defence, paying the ultimate price in the absence of adequate security forces.
Family members of the deceased vigilantes have called on the Katsina State Government to provide support for the families left behind and to increase security deployments in the Masaku axis. They also appealed to the government to equip local vigilantes with better weapons and communication tools. “Our sons are dying defending their land. They deserve honour and support, not to be forgotten,” a grieving father said.
The Katsina State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the clash, but a police source confirmed that a report had been filed and that patrols had been intensified in the area. The state government has previously pledged to strengthen security architecture, but residents say the promises have not translated into visible results. As the sun set over Masaku, the community mourned their fallen heroes, including the man who found faith just two weeks before he met his martyrdom. May their souls rest in peace, and may their sacrifice hasten the return of peace to Nigeria’s troubled North‑West.
