Suspected Fulani bandits have killed two persons and injured several others in a late‑night attack on Kyeng village in the Bachi District of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, community sources and a youth group said on Monday. The assault occurred on Sunday night, with armed men invading the village and shooting sporadically for several hours, plunging residents into terror and panic.
The National President of the Berom Youth Moulders‑Association (BYM), Barr. Solomon Mwatiri, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday morning through the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong. According to the association, the armed Fulani terrorists ambushed residents while they were asleep and unleashed terror on them. The victims were identified as Peter Dung, 22, and Amos Bele Danbwarang, 19, who were reportedly shot dead before the attackers fled into nearby bushes.
The association strongly condemned the killing of the two Berom youths, describing it as a continuation of violent assaults on communities in the area. The attack was unprovoked, the group said, lamenting that frantic calls to security agencies proved abortive as they refused to come to the rescue of the victims who were left at the mercy of the assailants. “This is another condemnable attack on a Berom village. It is not only barbaric, inhuman, but also part of the continuing violence against innocent native communities in Plateau State,” the BYM statement said.
The latest incident comes just days after attacks in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where over 10 people were reportedly massacred. The violence in Plateau State has been relentless, with multiple communities coming under coordinated assaults in recent weeks. Just last Saturday, seven persons, including a police officer, were killed by gunmen who attacked several communities in Barkin Ladi. In that assault, residents said the attackers invaded multiple communities Saturday evening, shooting at villagers. The Berom Youth Moulders‑Association confirmed that the attacks occurred simultaneously in Sabon Layi, Rakung, Gangare, Zat, Bet and areas in the General Hospital axis.
In a separate development, at least two farmers and 21 cattle were killed on Sunday in separate attacks in Riyom and Jos South local government areas of Plateau State. Meanwhile, across the state, armed groups continue to operate with impunity, ambushing communities and leaving trails of death and destruction. The BYM has called on security agencies to immediately pursue the perpetrators, arrest them, and ensure that justice is served, while urging the government at all levels to take firm and decisive measures to end the persistent killings and insecurity affecting Plateau communities.
The repeated attacks have continued to heighten tension across Plateau communities, particularly in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bassa and Bokkos local government areas, where residents have repeatedly called for stronger security presence and proactive intelligence operations. The police have previously announced the deployment of additional tactical teams and operational assets to Barkin Ladi to contain the situation and prevent further attacks, but the violence has continued unabated.
Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association, Danjuma Auta, has described the recurring attacks as tragic and condemnable, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable rural communities. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has alleged that the persistent attacks in parts of the state are politically motivated, suggesting that the timing of the violence and the evolving political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections could be interconnected. Describing the attacks as "pure acts of terrorism," Mutfwang has vowed that his administration would take decisive steps to restore peace and security across the state. However, efforts to obtain official reactions from security agencies following Sunday's attack in Kyeng village were unsuccessful as of Monday afternoon.
