Troops of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, have arrested two suspected logistics operatives in Damaturu, the headquarters of Damaturu Local Government Area in Yobe State, marking a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle the support networks fuelling the decade‑old insurgency in Nigeria’s North‑East.
The arrests, which took place at approximately 12:05 p.m. on May 11, 2026, were the result of actionable intelligence generated through communication intercepts linked to the earlier arrest of a repentant member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). According to security sources who spoke to counter‑insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the operation was executed without incident in Damaturu town.
Preliminary findings from ongoing military investigations have revealed a disturbing chain of criminal activity. The two suspects were allegedly part of a covert ammunition supply network. One of the individuals, according to sources, had been tasked with collecting ammunition from the second suspect for onward delivery to a terrorist commander still operating at large within the region.
The suspects are currently in military custody undergoing intense interrogation. Security operatives are now locked in a race against time to track down the alleged terrorist commander and recover the ammunition that was meant to be delivered. Makama quoted military sources as stating that the suspects are currently in custody while efforts are ongoing to track down the alleged terrorist commander and recover the ammunition intended for delivery.
This latest operation is part of a broader, intensified campaign by the Nigerian military to systematically strangle the logistical arteries of Boko Haram and ISWAP. While combat operations have inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists, security analysts have long noted that the ability of these groups to launch devastating attacks depends on a steady supply of food, fuel, and, most critically, ammunition. By targeting the supply chain at its source, the military aims to degrade the insurgents’ capacity to fight.
The arrests in Damaturu came on the heels of another successful intelligence‑led operation by Operation HADIN KAI in neighbouring Borno State. In a separate but related development, troops arrested a 40‑year‑old woman, Hauwa Bulama, in Konduga Local Government Area. Preliminary investigations revealed that she was allegedly on her way to meet four of her children who are believed to be members of a terrorist group. In the same sweep, two other suspects, identified as Bakura and Adiza, were also arrested in Damaturu during follow‑up operations linked to the interception of a suspected ammunition courier. Investigators disclosed that Adiza had allegedly been assigned to collect ammunition for onward delivery to a terrorist commander still at large.
The sustained military pressure has yielded results elsewhere in the theatre. Between May 11 and May 14, 2026, troops also conducted a coordinated operation near Amuda, following an air interdiction around the Mandara Mountains. The mission led to the rescue of six abducted women and children — Aisha Musa, 18; Aisha Mohammed, 17; Fatima Yahaya, 20; Saudatu Musa, 4; Garba Mohammed, 5; and a three‑month‑old infant, Mohammed Yahaya. The victims, who had been kidnapped during a Boko Haram/ISWAP attack on Ngoshe community in March 2026, were immediately given medical attention before being reunited with their families through community leadership.
The Nigerian military has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations aimed at dismantling terrorist cells, rescuing captives, and restoring peace across the North‑East. The Joint Task Force North‑East, Operation HADIN KAI, has consistently urged residents to provide timely information to security agencies, as the fight against insurgency is as much about intelligence as it is about firepower. The successful arrest of the two ammunition couriers in Damaturu is a testament to what can be achieved when intelligence is shared and acted upon. For the troops who carried out the operation, the arrests are one small victory in a long, grinding campaign. For the people of Yobe State, they are a sign that the days of the insurgents operating with impunity may finally be numbered.
