The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), announcing that candidates who recorded deficiencies in key subjects will have an opportunity to take part in a re-sit examination.

NECO announced the release of the results on Thursday, June 25, 2026, following the conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. The meeting approved the results and also fixed July 22 and 23, 2026, as the dates for the BECE re-sit examination in Mathematics and English Studies.

The examination body said a total of 186,291 candidates registered for the 2026 BECE across Nigeria and selected international centres.

According to NECO, the candidates participated in examinations covering 12 subjects during the assessment period.

The council stated that the examination involved candidates from all 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries.

The 2026 BECE commenced on April 20, 2026, and was concluded on April 30, 2026, after candidates completed their scheduled papers.

The release of the results followed the approval process carried out by the NECO Award Committee, which reviewed the examination procedures and outcomes before granting clearance for publication.

The committee meeting was attended by members of NECO management as well as secondary school principals representing schools across different parts of the country.

The Chairperson of the Award Committee, Folake David, who is the Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, represented the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, at the meeting.

David expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination and the processes involved in preparing and releasing the results.

She commended the efforts of officials involved in ensuring that the examination was completed and the results processed within the expected timeframe.

NECO explained that the BECE re-sit examination was introduced to assist candidates who have conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both subjects.

The council clarified that the re-sit opportunity is not designed for all candidates but specifically targets those who require improvement in the affected subjects.

The examination body said the arrangement would allow eligible candidates to correct their deficiencies without having to repeat an entire academic session.

The re-sit examination is expected to help successful candidates obtain the necessary certification required for progression into Senior Secondary School One (SSS I).

NECO stated that the initiative is part of efforts to provide students with opportunities to continue their education while maintaining examination standards.

The council has continued to emphasise the importance of credible assessments in determining students’ academic progression.

The BECE serves as an important examination for students completing junior secondary education in Nigeria.

The results help determine candidates’ eligibility for placement into senior secondary education programmes.

The examination also provides schools, parents and education authorities with information about students’ academic performance.

NECO has continued to manage the BECE alongside other national examinations as part of Nigeria’s education assessment system.

The council also reiterated its commitment to improving examination administration and ensuring transparency in the conduct of its assessments.

The release of the 2026 BECE results comes as students and schools prepare for the next academic stage.

Candidates who performed successfully will proceed with admission processes into senior secondary schools.

Those required to participate in the re-sit examination will now have another opportunity to meet the necessary academic requirements.

The council advised affected candidates and schools to take note of the announced dates and prepare adequately for the additional examination.

The Mathematics and English Studies re-sit examination will take place on July 22 and 23, 2026.

NECO said further information regarding the examination process would be communicated through appropriate channels.

The council urged candidates, parents and schools to rely on official information from NECO regarding examination matters.

The release of the results marks another stage in the academic journey of thousands of junior secondary school students across Nigeria and overseas centres.
