The Gombe State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert the newly constructed General Hospital Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre, ensuring its immediate operationalisation.

The hospital, built and fully equipped with modern medical facilities by Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration, will now serve as a critical referral facility not only for Gombe State but for the entire North East region.

The MoU signing took place at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare headquarters in Abuja, with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, signing on behalf of Gombe State, and Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, representing the Federal Government. Witnesses included Gombe State Commissioner of Health Dr. Habu Dahiru and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs. Daju Kachallom.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the development as a milestone in expanding access to quality healthcare. “This hospital is not just for the people of Gombe State. Given the central location of Gombe within the subregion, it will serve as a critical referral facility for the entire North East and beyond,” he stated. He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the conversion and reiterated Gombe State’s commitment to supporting the smooth implementation of the MoU.

Highlighting the achievements of his administration, Governor Yahaya noted improvements in Primary Health Care (PHC), including the provision of at least two fully functional PHCs in each of the state’s 114 political wards, as well as the reconstruction and establishment of three state-of-the-art General Hospitals, one in each senatorial district.

In his remarks, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, commended Governor Yahaya for his visionary leadership and consistent delivery in the health sector. “Your administration reflects the very spirit of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, delivering high-impact projects that directly improve the lives of citizens,” he said. The Minister added that the Kumo facility would become the 16th Federal Hospital established under the current administration and assured that resources, personnel, equipment, and operational support would be mobilized immediately.

Responding to a request from Governor Yahaya for Federal intervention in the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre in Kaltungo, the Minister pledged support and collaboration to ensure the facility’s effectiveness.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health also lauded the partnership between Gombe State and the Federal Government, emphasizing its role in bridging healthcare access gaps across Nigeria.
