The Kingdom of Bahrain has strengthened its global commitment to women’s economic empowerment with a $200,000 contribution to the Women Entrepreneurs in Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund, an initiative championed by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala announced the development via her X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing gratitude to the Bahraini leadership for backing the initiative. She highlighted the active roles played by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Minister of Trade Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro, Minister of Finance Sheikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, and Ambassador Abdulla Abdullatif Abdulla, alongside his team led by Ms. Maryam Al Doseri.
Okonjo-Iweala noted that Bahrain has consistently been at the forefront of empowering women entrepreneurs, stressing that this latest support demonstrates the nation’s commitment to promoting inclusivity in digital trade.
Experts say such financial contributions are critical in helping women-led businesses access global markets through technology. Public reaction has also been positive, with many describing Bahrain’s gesture as a model for other nations to emulate in advancing women’s participation in digital economies.
