TotalEnergies, NNPC Renew Partnership To Reduce Methane Emissions In Nigeria

TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and NNPC Limited have renewed their cooperation agreement aimed at reducing methane emissions through the continued deployment of advanced monitoring technology across oil and gas operations in Nigeria.

The renewed agreement was announced on Monday, June 22, 2026, extending for another 24 months a partnership between TotalEnergies and NNPC that began in December 2023. The collaboration focuses on methane detection, measurement, and reduction using TotalEnergies’ AUSEA technology.

AUSEA, which stands for Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications, is a drone-based monitoring system developed by TotalEnergies in partnership with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Reims.

The technology is designed to detect methane and carbon monoxide emissions with high precision, allowing operators to identify emission sources and take measures to reduce environmental impact.

Country Chair and Managing Director of TotalEnergies Nigeria, Matthieu Bouyer, said the company remains committed to taking practical steps toward reducing emissions from its operations.

Bouyer stated that TotalEnergies was the first exploration and production operator in Nigeria to eliminate routine flaring across all its operated assets by the end of 2023.

He explained that the company has set an objective of reaching near-zero methane emissions by 2030 as part of its wider environmental strategy.

According to TotalEnergies, AUSEA monitoring campaigns are now conducted across all operated sites, with regular flights carried out to identify possible methane emissions and support reduction efforts.

The company said the technology provides improved measurement capabilities and allows operators to respond more quickly when emissions are detected.

Bouyer noted that extending the partnership with NNPC would help support Nigeria’s efforts to reduce methane emissions while improving the management of energy resources.

He said the renewed cooperation would allow both organisations to continue using technology-driven solutions to address environmental concerns within the energy sector.

The partnership also reflects wider efforts by energy companies and national oil organisations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve sustainability practices.

Methane is considered a major contributor to climate change, and reducing its release has become a key focus for many countries and energy producers globally.

The renewed agreement between TotalEnergies and NNPC is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two organisations in applying modern technology for environmental monitoring.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector to improve operational standards while supporting emission reduction targets.

TotalEnergies and NNPC said continued collaboration among industry stakeholders remains important for balancing energy production with environmental responsibility.

The companies maintained that improved methane management can contribute to more efficient operations and support Nigeria’s long-term energy and environmental goals.
