Enugu Police Foil Transnational Human Trafficking Attempt, Arrest Suspect and Rescue Two Teenage Girls

Published on 14 August 2025 at 13:39

In a decisive move against human trafficking, the Enugu State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old suspect, Raymond Sunday Wonna, and rescued two teenage girls from being trafficked across international borders.

The victims — Miracle Ogar (18) and Angela Kingsley (16), both from Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State — were intercepted on 30th July 2025 at around 2:00 p.m. by operatives of the Command’s Crack Tactical Squad during a routine patrol along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.

Deceptive Job Promise Unmasked

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who posed as a casual labourer, lured the girls from Ogoja, Cross River State, under the false pretense of securing lucrative jobs in Ghana. His real plan was to traffic them to a restaurant allegedly owned by his “baby mama” in Ghana.

Shockingly, further findings indicate that the suspect attempted to sexually assault the victims while they were lodged in a hotel awaiting departure.

Swift Police Action and Safe Return

Thanks to the prompt intervention of the Enugu police, the two victims were rescued before crossing the border and have since been safely reunited with their families. Efforts are underway to track and arrest other members of the trafficking syndicate connected to the case.

Commissioner’s Warning and Call to Action

Commending his officers, Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, praised the operatives’ vigilance and ordered a thorough investigation to ensure swift prosecution of the suspect.

“We remain resolute in the fight against human trafficking and other violent crimes. Citizens must stay alert and report any suspicious activity immediately,” CP Giwa stated.

The Command urged the public to contact them through the Control Room numbers 08032003702, 08086671202, or via the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre on 112.
