Governor Umo Eno has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing sports and tourism in Akwa Ibom State, marking the conclusion of the 2025 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival with celebrations, cash rewards, and commendations.
Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the Uyo Sports Stadium, Governor Eno praised the Inter-Ministerial Organizing Committee, led by Commissioner for Sports, Paul “Sports” Bassey, for successfully staging the first edition of the festival in 15 years.
Over 3,600 athletes from the 31 local government areas competed across 18 individual and five team sports, demonstrating unity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. “This Festival has showcased an infectious spirit of brotherhood and peace across Akwa Ibom,” the Governor remarked.
Highlighting the economic potential of sports, Governor Eno said, “Sports is a multi-billion-dollar global industry – a key focus under our ARISE Agenda for sports tourism. The theme of this Festival – Nurturing Talents, Promoting Tourism – reflects our strategic vision to position Akwa Ibom as a hub for sports and tourism beyond oil.”
Cash rewards were announced for medalists, with gold winners receiving ₦500,000, silver ₦250,000, and bronze ₦150,000. Athletes who excelled at the National Youth Games in Asaba, where Akwa Ibom placed seventh with 11 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze medals, will also benefit from the package and receive advanced training at the State Sports Academy in Eket.
Local governments were recognized for participation: ₦15 million was awarded to the overall winner, ₦10 million to second place, ₦5 million to third place, while all remaining LGAs received ₦2 million each.
Governor Eno directed the Sports Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Inter-Ministerial Committee, to start preparations for next year’s festival and revive inter-house and football competitions in secondary schools – platforms that have historically produced sports legends such as Etim Esin, James Etokebe, and the late Uwem Ekarika.
“After one week of intense but healthy competition, this sports festival has produced winners at every level. Today, we have proven that Akwa Ibom is ready for a sports renaissance. Congratulations to us all,” Governor Eno concluded.
