The European Union Elections Follow-up Mission to Nigeria met with Senator Simon Bako Lalong, Chairman of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, in Abuja to discuss the ongoing electoral reform process and the proposed Electoral Amendment Bill 2025.

The EU delegation, including Ralph Michael Peters (Team Leader/Political Analyst), Eirini Gounari (Legal Expert), and Maros Gabriel (Election Expert), held discussions on the state of play of the amendment bill and its anticipated role in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system. The Chief of Mission, Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Barry Andrews, is expected to join the team in early October.

Senator Lalong welcomed the engagement, explaining that the Senate and House Committees have been actively working on the proposed amendment bill, which remains a working document requiring input from stakeholders. He noted that both chambers have met repeatedly to discuss key issues, with a conference report on the electoral amendments set for discussion once the Senate reconvenes from recess.

The Senator also highlighted plans for a retreat and public hearing to gather additional input, which will be analyzed by the Joint Committee for consideration and possible passage. He assured the EU delegation that the Committee is working closely with civil society organizations, INEC, and other stakeholders to ensure a thorough review process.

The EU team expressed appreciation for the opportunity to understand Nigeria’s preparations for the next general elections, particularly in relation to ongoing electoral reforms.
