Abuja — Prominent human rights activist and public interest lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo, has strongly condemned the Federal Government for what he described as a “shameful display of hypocrisy and repression” following the arrest of peaceful protesters demanding the release of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Omirhobo — who is also known for his pro-bono work and activism — criticised the government for unleashing force on unarmed citizens exercising their constitutional rights. He noted that while Nigerians armed only with placards and courage were being brutalised and detained, armed bandits and terrorists continue to roam freely and even hold meetings with government officials.
Omirhobo stated that the October 20, 2025 demonstration, which took place across several parts of Abuja, was a peaceful exercise of democratic rights. “Instead of dialogue, the government responded with tear gas, live ammunition, and unlawful arrests,” he said. “Even Kanu’s lawyer and brother were reportedly beaten and detained. This is not democracy — it is hypocrisy.”
He further argued that any government that negotiates with violent actors but imprisons citizens for peaceful protest has lost its moral authority to lead. “You cannot preach rule of law while silencing dissent. That is tyranny wearing democratic clothing,” Omirhobo added.
The activist demanded the immediate release of all arrested protesters, accountability for police brutality, and respect for the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. He also called on security agencies to uphold the principle of equal protection for all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political belief.
Omirhobo reaffirmed his commitment to using the law as a tool for justice and urged Nigerians not to be intimidated by state oppression. “We will remain peaceful but persistent until justice, fairness, and the rule of law are restored. You can gas our bodies, but not our conscience,” he declared.
As of press time, security agencies have yet to provide an official statement regarding the arrests or allegations of excessive force. Human rights organisations have confirmed that they are monitoring the situation closely and preparing legal actions to secure the release of those detained.
