The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified preparations for the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, as a four-member delegation from its headquarters, led by National Commissioners, joined the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, for an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting in Awka on Friday.
The meeting, which formed part of the delegation’s multi-day readiness assessment visit, focused on evaluating security measures and inter-agency coordination to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.
In her remarks, Dr. Agwu commended ICCES for its consistent role in maintaining security before, during, and after elections. She praised the synergy among security agencies, attributing Anambra’s current atmosphere of peace to their collaborative efforts.
“We are aware that ICCES is at the core of election security and has never failed in its responsibility. As we approach the November 8 election, we must ensure early deployment of materials and personnel to polling units to guarantee a smooth process. We are entering this election with a peaceful state of mind,” Dr. Agwu stated.
Dr. Kenneth Ukeagu, the National Commissioner overseeing Anambra, echoed her sentiments, describing the ICCES meeting as “as important as the election itself.” He urged continued collaboration between INEC and security agencies, noting that such cooperation was critical to maintaining the integrity of the process.
Other National Commissioners present — Prof. Rhoda Gumus, Mr. Sam Olumekun, mni, and Dr. Baba Bila — emphasized the need for efficient coordination at the Registration Area Centres (RACs) to ensure timely movement of materials and personnel on election day.
Representatives from the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Civil Defence, and the military reaffirmed their readiness, assuring INEC of enhanced operations across identified flashpoints.
“We have strengthened our operations and updated our strategies to address emerging threats. Our goal is to ensure that the election proceeds smoothly and peacefully across the state,” the security agencies said in a joint assurance.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to uphold peace, transparency, and professionalism throughout the electoral process.
