The Abia State Police Command has apprehended three suspects in connection with gunrunning, conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and attempted murder following a string of intelligence-led operations across the state.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, October 25, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen C. Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, the arrests were made after detectives acted on credible intelligence. The police explained that on October 17, 2025, operatives from the Central Police Station, Umuahia, intercepted a cargo consignment linked to one Kalu Ugwa Ogbonnaya, 54, which contained two pump-action guns and seventy-six rounds of live cartridges.
During interrogation, Ogbonnaya confessed that the consignment was meant to be handed over to one Agu Ugochukwu, 39, who was later arrested. He further revealed that Agu was receiving the weapons on behalf of another suspect currently residing in the United States. The police confirmed that both men are now in custody while investigations continue at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia.
In a related development, on October 23, 2025, operatives of the Scorpion Squad responded to a distress call in Aba, where a vigilante member identified as Ukandu Leach, 43, allegedly shot one Chukwu Emeka, 39, on the right leg during a confrontation. The suspect was promptly arrested, and a locally made double-barrelled gun was recovered from him. The victim, according to police reports, was taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention, and further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa commended the swift action of the operatives and reaffirmed the command’s determination to rid the state of illegal firearms and other forms of violent crime. He called on residents to remain alert and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. “The safety of our citizens remains our top priority,” he said. “We urge members of the public to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. Together, we can make Abia State safer for all.”
The Commissioner also reminded residents of the command’s emergency contact numbers, encouraging them to “see something, say something,” as the police continue to intensify efforts to maintain peace and order across the state.
