Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Nigerians, particularly parents with children living abroad, to ensure their wards learn and uphold the Yoruba language and culture to preserve their identity.
Speaking at the 26th edition of the Odun Omo Oluwo Festival 2025, themed “Awaken the Owu Spirit”, held at แปba Adeleye Park, Sokori, Ori-Omi, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo emphasized that cultural heritage remains a critical legacy for parents to pass on. He stated, “Our culture is the totality of our existence. If anyone says I don’t have a culture, that means they’re saying I don’t have a way of life and I will challenge that. There’s nothing that can replace our culture.”
Obasanjo recounted an experience of a professor friend who neglected teaching his children Yoruba. When the children traveled abroad, they were asked by peers about their culture—a knowledge their father had failed to impart. The former President used this as a cautionary example to stress the importance of preserving one’s cultural identity.
Representing Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, his deputy, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele, urged indigenes of Owu Kingdom to invest in their homeland, highlighting that such efforts foster job creation and economic growth, consistent with the state’s ISEYA initiative. She emphasized, “No matter where life takes you, Owu remains your home, your identity, and your pride. Let us pass on to the next generation the virtues of discipline, honesty, hard work, and unity.”
The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, แปba Saka Matemilola, expressed gratitude to dignitaries including Obasanjo, Governor Abiodun, Senators Ibikunle Amosun and Solomon Adeola, traditional rulers, and other notable sons and daughters of Owu for their contributions to the kingdom’s development.
The festival showcased cultural performances, traditional rites, and celebrations aimed at reinforcing the values, language, and heritage of the Owu people.
