Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Lagos State Government to immediately halt the ongoing violent forced evictions in the Oworoshoki communities, describing the demolitions as inhumane and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Sunday, the human rights organization said that security operatives accompanying demolition teams used excessive force, including firing tear gas canisters, which caused panic and forced hundreds of families to flee their homes.
“This round of demolition is so violent to the extent that some homes were torn apart by bulldozers while families were still inside,” Amnesty International Nigeria said.
The group condemned the government’s approach, emphasizing that punishing residents for the state’s urban planning failures was unjust and violated international human rights standards.
“Lagos State Government must halt these attacks on people living in poverty. Punishing the people for the state’s urban planning failures is unacceptable,” the statement added.
Amnesty International has consistently raised concerns about forced evictions in Lagos, warning that such actions leave thousands homeless and further deepen poverty and inequality.
The organization urged the Lagos authorities to engage with affected residents and explore humane, lawful alternatives to demolition, in accordance with Nigeria’s obligations under international human rights law.
