The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a series of coordinated operations across the country, uncovering several attempts to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine, and other narcotics through airports and highways, while also raiding a Lagos nightclub allegedly used for drug-related parties.
At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted 70 parcels of cocaine ingeniously hidden inside containers of cocoa butter body cream bound for London. The drugs, weighing 3.6 kilograms, were detected during cargo checks on October 14. A freight agent, identified as Lawal Mustapha Olakunle, was arrested immediately, leading to the eventual capture of two key suspects, Ogunmuyide Taiwo Deborah and Mutiu Adebayo Adebiyi, following follow-up operations across Ikeja and GRA areas.
In another operation at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, officers arrested Lemena Mark, a 35-year-old citizen of Lesotho, who attempted to ship over 100 grams of methamphetamine concealed in herbal coffee tea packs to the Philippines.
Further north, NDLEA operatives in Kwara State intercepted 21,950 capsules of tramadol hidden in a large water heater. The suspect, Umar Abubakar, was apprehended after intelligence led officers to Bode Saadu in Moro Local Government Area.
Meanwhile, a major drug raid at Proxy Nightclub, located on Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, shocked Lagos residents in the early hours of Sunday, October 26. Acting on credible intelligence, NDLEA stormed the venue around 3 a.m., arresting over 100 people, including the club owner, socialite Mike Eze Nwogu, popularly known as Pretty Mike. Seized items included cartons of “Loud” and canisters of “laughing gas,” both classified as controlled substances.
In the northeast, NDLEA patrol teams in Taraba State seized 450,000 pills of tramadol and Exol-5, hidden in a truck carrying building materials. Two men, Auwal Musa and Salihu Bala, were arrested en route to Adamawa State.
The agency also reported multiple arrests in Nasarawa, Kogi, and Ondo States, where officers recovered hundreds of kilograms of cannabis (“skunk”) and other illicit substances. In Abia State, a 75-year-old man, identified as Echendu Onuoka, and a 60-year-old woman, Aukana John, were arrested for possession of cannabis during a separate operation.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended officers involved in the nationwide crackdown, describing the seizures as proof of the agency’s renewed vigilance against transnational drug trafficking. He reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to what he called a “balanced, intelligence-led drug control strategy.”
The operations, which spanned airports, highways, and residential communities, are part of the agency’s ongoing War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, aimed at cutting off drug supply networks while intensifying prevention programs in schools and workplaces nationwide.
